  • Since the management and director team do not have any experience working with the students in an academic or trade capacity, they should be taking the suggestion and advice of those with the appropriate certifications and experience. We should be a part of the conversation when something is going to change on center so that we can voice what that change will mean for student behaviors inside the classrooms and training areas. There also needs to be less negativity. Even when being praised for strong work production or giving staff incentives, there is always a negative aspect that must be mentioned too rather than just leaving things on a high note. If you are having a meeting to talk about positive things happening, stick to all positive talk, managers should not feel that they need to end meetings exerting their power demanding something of their team members. This just feeds a negative culture on center. No matter how many good things you do for your staff, if you continue to pair those with negative comments you will not see a change in culture.

Pro

I love work with the student population we cater to. I enjoy being a part of a program that can make a difference in someone's life if they have the right drive and determination to want to better their circumstances. This program has so much promise if all of the departments worked together for the betterment of the students.

Contra

The supervisors in most areas on my center have never actually done the jobs of those they are managing. If you do not understand the job of those you supervise, you cannot properly manage your staff. If you supervise teachers and you have never been a teacher and do not have a teaching certification, you cannot decide what will work best in a classroom without feedback from those with experience. If you have never been a counselor, and do not have experience counseling others, you should not have the power to tell those with the skills and degrees how to do their jobs. We need experienced individuals running each area, team members who understand the struggles of the department because they have faced those challenges first hand themselves.

You always work independently cause there is no one around for you if you drop dead on the job or to pick you off the pavement if you fall. God knows the Handicapped parking is filled with people who are not Handicapped.
