This is a family business so the owners are VERY INVOLVED in the day to day operations. The problem is that they have hired managers and supervisors to handle the company but they micro manage them and all the other employees that follow. There is no chain of command like it's supposed to be. One manager will tell you one thing, then an owner will tell you something different, then a different owner tells you another thing. No one is on the same page and this creates a lot of frustration and chaos.
Management does NOT support the staff as much as they should. They live by the montra "the customer is ALWAYS right" no matter the situation or how it makes the employee look. They will throw you under the bus in a heart beat, especially to the owners if it means making them look good.
Teamwork here is surprisingly good given the culture. The front of the house team have no problem helping each other out. I believe it's because everyone knows of the poor leadership there is to look up to, so if everyone doesn't help each other, no one makes money. There may be selfish moments during a busy time, but not often. As far as the managers and owners are concerned teamwork is non-existent! They will be at a table talking and see how busy you are but will never lend a helping hand, all the while telling you what needs to be done. Dead Weight.
Most of the time you have no choice but to work independently because the managers are always upstairs in the office and only resurface if there is a problem. Not really a bad thing unless you are new and need additional guidance.
Communication is not well in this establishment. Staff will learn of new menu items or a change of policy the day it is to be in effect. At times customers know of changes before the servers or bartenders do.
Women and men have an equal opportunity to work here.
Umgang mit älteren Kollegen
Managers and staff will talk negatively about each other when they are in their personal circle; as most people do. However, that does not affect the business or the ability to work together. You may see someone make a face after someone else speaks or walk by, but it never becomes more than that.
Karriere / Weiterbildung
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO CAREER GROWTH HERE! The owners only want to promote people within the family no matter the lack of experience. They would rather hire and fire six managers within the year than to promote a current staff member who have been there for years. If you do decide to work here just treat it as a stepping stone to get to where you really want to be because you will never be more than what you are there.
Gehalt / Sozialleistungen
Compensation was less than fair. Customers don't always tips because of circumstances beyond a server or bartender's control. Managers also would comp an entire check for an unsatisfied customer leaving the server or bartender no compensation for their time or efforts. There are no benefits (sick leave, vacation, PTO, etc.) and the hourly wage is terrible. Although it is standard for employees working for tips to make less per hour, the wage could still stand to go up at least $2. Even still, if you work enough hours and finesse enough customers you could leave that day with a nice chuck of change.
Comfortableness depends on the season. During the summer the is extremely hot. The cooling system often do down and when it is up is isn't powerful enough. During the winter the heating system feels like air. It blows out heat about every 15 minutes for minutes then returns back to the cool air. It"s more tolerable than the summer months. As for as actually performing the work, everything that is needed is at your disposal. Unless a shipment is late and a few products are not in storage.
Umwelt- / Sozialbewusstsein
The company does not participate in any recycling or environmental awareness programs.
This is the perfect place to work if you are a parent, student, or someone with multiple jobs and in need of flexibility because of the option to choose your availability. Often times the turn over rate is high due to college graduates or simply someone moving into a different phase of life. The shifts aren't set in stone and you are able to switch with a team member upon a manager's approval.
This company have a low image rate. It is known to have rats and fruit flies all over the place, especially in the summer time. Customers have stopped coming for that precise reason. The Original Ben's Chili Bowl was known because it's a D.C. landmark and it survived the remodel of U Street, but they are still trying to ride that wave. Lately Ben's Next Door nor Ben's Chili Bowl have been a popular place to visit.
- For the managers and owners to take the customers and employees suggestions seriously. They should make their employees feel valued and appreciated. They should expand their budget for proper satiation practices. They should look at the talent that they already have on their staff and stop hiring new General Managers every 6 months. Provide parking for employees.
They do not discourage you to work. You are allowed to work and make as much money as you need/want.
The management team and owners don't have a set strategy to encourage employees nor bring in new customers. Everyone does what they feel at a particular time and everyone is "in charge". They all want to be the boss and that just causes everyone to step on someone's toes.
