- I would change the selection process for substitute teachers. All subs would need at least two years of college before being recommended for classroom experience. Also, I firy believe in giving teachers and support staff the decency in excused time off instead of being pressured into using sick leave or leave without pay time to compensate for snow days or other emergency circumstances. Kitchen staff and secretary clerical staff could use a customer service introductions course before the school year begins.
I have been able to build positive relationships with other teachers and staff in both buildings I have worked in with this school district. I have been elected as the leadership representative for our grade level team, and I am an active member on our MBI team, as well as involved with the teacher’s union. Working for Browning Public Schools has allowed me to grow in my professional skills and attend local workshops, out of district professional development opportunities, and National Conferences! My class sizes have been small as an emerging educator, and the parental involvement at both schools I have worked in is continuing to show growth potential. My current supervisor is very transparent and has proven to compromise on building issues or other situations that need remediation. I find my workplace to be very uplifting. The instructional coaches have supported me with resources and ongoing encouragement to provide me with immediate feedback on my teaching strategies, as well as offer guidance when needed to fine tune my lessons or ideas. The staff in our building is extremely helpful and always willing to lend a hand when someone is feeling overwhelmed. Our school counselor represents herself well and gives more of her time visiting families on home visits to maintain relationships and improve communication in our community.
I know all honesty, I believe since we are a customer service business and interact with children and families on a daily basis, all staff memebers should act as such representatives. School cooks and secretary personnel could improve in this area. I also do not feel strongly about the selection process or how it is made for substitute teachers when staff needs to be absent. Further, staff is required to sometimes take leave without pay for snow days or extreme circumstances that would render emergency school closures. These concerns need to be addressed and remediated at once.
