  • Not requiring women to wear jeans vs active wear. I’ve seen a lot of ass cracks in the past. And other ppl have accidentally seen mine. We should be able to wear safe secure comfortable clothes in this field.

Pro

I’m touched by the children. Very few children leave unloved by the staff. The kids there have gone through some terrible things at an early age. The center want to prevent these children from being what they’ve experienced in the past, in the future. It takes a village to raise a child. But, even a village can’t be expected to change a childs view of the world and make them comply.

Contra

Firing ppl for mistakes they’ve made only once. These restraint aren’t easy. Though they happen often in residential, I felt as though I was expected to hurt myself at their expense. There are times I did not feel safe there are times where I had gotten hurt and my injuries were taken lightly. I guess when you fight you shouldn’t get injured a lot. Even though we don’t fight the children. We only restrain them. But for the next few days you can feel the effects in your body. There’s no way for a counselor to not hurt their self during restraints. And vice versa. It just depends on the strength of the individuals. Counselors get fired for a child’s injury. I wouldn’t want anyone to restrain my child. A sedative is less harmful. Idk
In addition, I don’t like that children that have seen certain neg things, are being seen in residential. Like fighting, restraints, molestation client to client. It’s like you send a traumatized kid in for help with one thing. And the come out more traumatized then before from their experience there. Again, I couldn’t let my child be in a place like that. It’s just nice to be able to work in trauma w/o being traumatized.

  • There are not any improvements that come to mind in regard to workplace policies, culture, or environment, etc.

Pro

I have great coworkers and colleagues and have created strong relationships. I feel that I can depend on them professionally as well as go to them for advice both professionally and academically.

Contra

There needs to be more focus on the overall well-being of employees and ensuring that their assignments are not taking too much of a toll on them. As well as focusing on the pay and benefits and employees and ensuring they are able to make a livable age.

  • A better starting pay. More team work between departments.

Pro

The company takes time to recognize all the programs that work under its umbrella. They do that by providing a thank lunch or breakfast. They have had ice cream parties and picnics. These events are done with individual programs or the entire center. I get to participate in planning these events.

Contra

The pay is low and the job is hard. If you stick around you do it because your heart is in it. Sometimes it leads to a low moral.
