A company using mistruths and misselling

Ex-Angestellte/r oder Arbeiter/inHat bis 2016 bei Wirecard in Aschheim gearbeitet.

Schlecht am Arbeitgeber finde ich

- Badly described job descriptions which are not what you are expected to do, may as well say "generic dogs body" for everyone
- Arrogance and neoptism are built into the company culture, if you are not playing into that, then you will be ignored
- Training is only given if you are in the cool group kissing up to your manager or team lead
- Promotion is not possible unless you are also kissing up to your manager
- Management abilities are very poor, much the same as randomly picking a stranger from the street, you could be lucky, but more likely that the person who is managing you is like a child in Kindergarten
- Extra hours and high pressure are expected, this could be avoided if there was some appreciation shown or if there was some structure rather than just constantly making unplanned things up
- Project management is very very poor. Seems that there is the focus on what your academic qualification is rather than if you have any experience or mental capacity
- Products are very poorly designed and the customers dislike them
- Colleagues are playing in the politics game and trying to hide that they don't have any idea what is happening so they then push it somewhere else
- Communication is extremely poor internally, thinking that everyone is in the same location and time zone, they could maybe be on a different planet.

Verbesserungsvorschläge

- Put some structure in place, and for a bank there really should be some processes followed
- Build a reliable customer base and actually care about giving them credit cards rather than just being desperate for the revenue
- Improve your backend systems, make sure that you implement a disaster recovery environment
- Get the foundations right instead of continually building on the poorly built infrastructure
- Stop focussing on getting press releases and start worrying about your staff.

Schlecht am Arbeitgeber finde ich

This company will do you no good. It won’t be prosperous to your career and there are good chances that your career will actually get damaged or even destroyed along the way.
Take a good and very thorough look at the company reviews from an employee’s perspective (Kununu, Glassdoor) as well as from a customer’s perspective (Trustpilot, Better Business Bureau, ...) and then ask yourself: do I REALLY want to work for THAT company? I believe that the answer to this question is self-explanatory.

Arbeitsatmosphäre

Among those companies that I have worked for during my career, Wirecard easily claims the doubtful accolade of being the worst choice ever when it comes to having a career as an IT professional. Despite the company’s reputation of being one of the experienced veterans in the payment business (that assessment is mainly based on self-advertisement), the large majority of employees don’t have any clue about payment industry basics, its associated processes and requirements as well as mere core IT basics.

The rare breed of experienced employee at Wirecard is kept small (career- and salary-wise). Usually, your team’s manager tries to avoid annual pay raises. If you try to force a pay raise out of your manager, he’ll give you a tearful speech about your salary raise being extraordinary high in comparison to your colleagues’ pay raises (hilarious performance - I always wondered if this is part of the Wirecard managerial training). In most cases, they rather decide to ‘promote’ you - which is a) usually pointless as promotions don’t come with a raise and b) job titles at Wirecard are utterly meaningless. But putting you in for a promotion ‘puts you in their debt’ - so they think.

Image

HR are well aware of the dreadful situation. As the employee attrition rate seems to be quite high (there were rumors about 30% percent employee loss per year), HR do their best to cope with the situation by trying to fill the void by hiring people from across the globe. Hiring criteria is mostly not based on their qualification but rather on the exploitation of EU Blue Card applicants. Yet, they face a vicious cycle as the issue is deeply embedded within the companies’ core DNA. And unless you decide to cull all company managers up to the highest level, you won’t be able to eradicate the root cause of what is going wrong at Wirecard. Ultimately, HR are bound to be part of the game - you won’t bite the hand that feeds you. As a result, employee feedbacks on Kununu and Glassdoor which are deemed non-favorable seem to have a ‘limited life span’. Some folks in my department have actually turned this recurring task of creating decentralized review backups into a sport before these reviews ‘accidentally’ vanish from those sites. In order to keep the e.g. Glassdoor company ratings up, some chap (usually from India) is then to post a company review where everything is glorified.

Karriere/Weiterbildung

If you intend to use Wirecard as a mere career stepping stone, don’t plan on staying longer than two years. Ensure to have an exit plan before you join them. A large chunk of Wirecard’s employees are inexperienced in the payment processing area - so don’t be surprised to encounter questions like “what is a credit card”. Apart from some very generic credit card basics, you won’t be able to learn anything but rather work on tedious and repetitive ops-related tasks as most of the company’s systems are duct-taped. 99% of your time will be occupied by ops-related tasks.

Get some feedback on your future department before you join. Don’t talk to the lobotomized “Wirecard is awesome” lemming who has been with the company for 10+ years but rather talk to the average Joe instead. You’ll recognize these people very easily - usually, they are the ones that look miserable all the time. 80% of the company’s employees seem to be from other countries all across the globe (which is actually one of the few good things that can be said about about the company). These poor schmucks have fallen victim to Wirecard’s EU work visa sponsorship - which will tie them to the company for the next 2 or 3 yrs

Vorgesetztenverhalten

Your career growth (if there is actually such a thing) is heavily dependent on whether your manager likes you or not. Agreed: this is also the case at other companies - but at Wirecard, this is crucial and a bane to your whole existence. If you make the mistake of joining Wirecard, get to know your manager asap and get him to like you A LOT - otherwise, you have just terminated your career prospects. Never forget that this company is powered by pure cronyism and a despicable ‘I-know-everything-about-your-skeletons-in-the-closet’ attitude.

Career-wise, you will not be able to progress one iota forward unless your manager supports your move. And if you don’t manage to get along with your manager and then try to switch to a different role in Wirecard, be prepared to be forced out of the company by your people manager. In most of the cases, the manager will simply block your move to the team that was initially happy to hire you. You’ll get ghosted or may even have to face false accusations, public insults - the whole shebang. In any way, your career at Wirecard will come to a grinding halt and you won’t be able to recover from it.

Arbeitsbedingungen

Finding a good people manager at Wirecard is as realistic as finding a crock of gold at the end of a rainbow. Most of the managerial posts have been assigned to people which have been with the company for 10+ years - regardless of whether they possess the necessary people managerial skills for such a role. These people have learned ‘to play the game’ which usually consists of becoming your boss’ best friend - and sacrificing fellow colleagues on your way to the next rung up the ladder. Fox Mulder from the X-Files could be working in their basement as ‘trust no one’ is literally the essential motto at Wirecard if you intend to survive your tenure. Don’t rely on verbal agreements as your manager will either ‘forget’ about having made those to you - or he might even call you a liar in front of your team mates. As written agreements are harder for them to dodge, they usually refrain from giving you anything in writing. But ultimately, they will break those agreements as well.

Kommunikation

Sharing knowledge and especially establishing a good level of openness and trust in inter-company communications is neither encouraged nor desired; in fact, your manager will resent any attempts of establishing a trusted communication process within the companies’ departments and is going to reprimand you in most of the cases. I never got this part and why it was deemed ‘inappropriate’ to inform your stakeholders properly on project statuses etc. Perhaps, the people at Wirecard do consider this approach as general weakness which needs to be avoided at all costs. Keep in mind that the company is a shark tank in a highly Darwinian environment.

Gehalt/Sozialleistungen

Despite the company’s financial value on the market, the salaries are mediocre at best (in comparison to other Munich-based companies). Yes, they also pay you an annual personal bonus. And yes, that bonus is 100% dependent on whether your are your manager’s golden boy or not - regardless of what has been agreed to as part of their annual goals process. Note that your bonus does not include e.g. company stock such as RSU’s.

Thank you for taking the time to write this detailed feedback which we value and take seriously. We are sorry to hear that your experience of working at Wirecard is not more positive.

You have mentioned many points that we would like to discuss with you personally. We would highly appreciate it, if you would contact us via askcareer@wirecard.com, so that we can try to find a way to improve your current situation. In case of concrete incidents in your team, please reach out to your responsible HR manager, who will handle your request confidentially.
In regards to the "vanished comments": We would like to emphasize that we do not (and also cannot) delete critical comments. If a comment is offensive towards our employees however, we report it to the platform. The respective platform then has to find out if the review is against their community guidelines, and ultimately makes the decision if a comment is excluded or not. Platforms like kununu are a great way to give a subjective insight into the company, but it is very important to us that this is not done at the expense of individual employees.

Kollegenzusammenhalt

One-Man-Show. Hier richtet man sich an Hagebaumarkt "Mach dein Ding", dann passt alles. Save your ass Politik und ganz oft Zeigefinger Buhmann Spielchen. Erbärmlich.

Umgang mit älteren Kollegen

gibt keine (20 - 40)

Vorgesetztenverhalten

If you are below average in terms of skill and can pretend to be working, you can have an easy life with a decent salary without having to lift your finger to often to do real work.

Schlecht am Arbeitgeber finde ich

Everything, except the worker bees

Verbesserungsvorschläge

Nothing that they don't know already but couldn't care less about

Arbeitsatmosphäre

The real worker bees (techies) are usually friendly, the banksters have a certain level of arrogance that you can feel. People appear to be divided by classes, people barely greet another either, except you know them. The majority of people are utterly clueless and useless. That starts from the application engineer that doesn't understand how garbage collection works in a JVM, to project managers just being a gofer for everything but the actual project, sales for selling things that are technically impossible to implement or they would break compliance, up to management that got promoted thanks to nepotism (which is still very common). Competence and good work is not wanted nor appreciated, advice from technically experienced employees is ignored. Every year there is a restructure that is utterly pointless. The only thing that changes is the organization structure chart, but the fundamental problems like lack of communication, little to no technical standards, processes or documentations continue to exists. Don't bother asking how these issues are solved, because nobody has an answer or actually cares.
Only growth matters. Growth results in value, eg growth = money;

Image

Surprisingly way to good, even though trustpilot, Playstore and App store have horrible reviews. Wirecard apparently invests a lot of money in good PR.

Work-Life-Balance

Burn out is very common. I have seen quite a few competent people lose their minds because of the politics and stress the environment unnecessarily causes. There's a gym and some massage chairs, a mediocre cafeteria and some other small things. It's a nice to have but imo doesn't make up for the stuff that you have to deal with on a daily basis. Yes, 40h weeks are commonly defined in your contract, but no 40h week can get a 10 year backlog of work evened out while being understaffed and no gym will help you deteriorating mind become fit again.

Umwelt-/Sozialbewusstsein

Internal discussions about ethical and moral implications of mobile payment, biometric authentication or data acquisition is not appreciated.

Karriere/Weiterbildung

Doesn't exist, titles don't mean anything, you are stuck until you switch departments, just to be stuck again. Every once in a while there might be a training offered to you, but usually none of it is applicable because that would imply that the company works as you'd expect it from a real enterprise business. For foreigners there's a German language course, though the quality varies from miserable to manageable.

Kollegenzusammenhalt

It varies a lot from team to team, as well as department. My team was pretty cool including my lead and we supported another as much as possible, but i guess we are one of the few.

Vorgesetztenverhalten

Russian roulette: sometimes you are lucky, sometimes you are not. Teamleads usually suffer the same or even more as you do, so the relation to them usually is ok. Management from head and higher is absolutely catastrophic. Transparency, which you would think would be necessary to a degree to think ahead and plan for the future, is none existent. There are no outlooks how the company intends to do solve specific issues on any level (apart from its own growth), just empty promises and generalized goals like globalization that you would normally feed investors with some powerpoint slides made by your PR department.

Arbeitsbedingungen

Way to many unnecessary obstacles to get work done efficiently. Starts with hardware, ends with software. Every employee that works with Unix systems, works on Windows, even the ones with Macs. You can not trust anyone to get things done. You have to be project manager, architect, designer, programmer and admin at the same time. Every information that you need to continue, needs to be gathered by you, because nobody else will do it for you, even if their job title would imply that it should. You are essentially Don Quichotte fighting against windmills. Nobody really knows how to manage a project. There's not enough staff to manage the project(s) plus daily business, at which point everything is escalated as high priority. The company is not willing to pay good money for skilled permanent employees that would be necessary for these jobs, instead they rather wastes additional money in consultants that walk away with knowledge or buy cheap and lesser qualified labor in masses, to compensate for a few expensive competent ones.
Nobody wants to be responsible for anything, only when there's some sort of reward or praise, especially middle management.

Kommunikation

There is no such thing as communication. The most reliable information are the whispers in the coffee and smoking areas. People talk a lot (way to much even) and only through accidentally eavesdropping you find out what's going on, but these infos are usually more solid than anything from management. There are multiple communication platforms just for HQ that are not compatible with another, which makes ops tasks unnecessarily complicated and redundant. Every department works in their own silos, has their own redundant software stack and sometimes 3 departments work parallel on the same solution without even knowing about it. I have never seen in operational or administrative areas any documents that would resemble business requirements and technical requirements in written form with use cases and things that you'd typically expect to find in such papers, to get projects organized. Everything's just thrown around in emails, 2 different chat clients that are also not compatible to another, and multiple documentation and ticketing platforms, etc and of course personally, if you are on good terms with the folks involved that have a say in it.

Gehalt/Sozialleistungen

People are underpaid for this industry. Partially justified due to the majority being clueless/useless and coming from countries with a lesser average salary.

Interessante Aufgaben

Technically things should be interesting, because the company has the financial backing to buy the fanciest stuff on the market. The reality is that a lot resources are wasted on things that are never used, because departments or specific people block the implementation on purpose. As interesting as a topic seems, this company manages to ruin almost everything right from the start, to the end. The only thing that you learn is how to _not_ do it.

Arbeitgeber-Kommentar

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. We are sorry to hear that your experience wasn't positive. The past years have been years of transition and growth for Wirecard and as we move forward we are continuously working on the improvement of our organization and the way we work.
