Suggestions for improvement

  • I personally would give less consideration to staff's opinions or preferences. I would gamble loss of revenue against confronting difficult repeat patrons to create an atmosphere of zero tolerance for some bad practices that have not been discouraged from some customers. I would have a salaried, bonus eligible kitchen manager to supplement the salaried, bonus eligible non-kitchen manager. I would give the general manager 100% control over payroll, profit and loss and spending. That supervisor would ultimately have to account for his/her policies versus profitability and be rewarded or consequenced accordingly.

What I like about the company

I have learned a great deal about how to run a restaurant, and subsequently any number of retail facilities as a supervisor of a high volume, reasonably priced bar and restaurant catering to a variety of patrons. I've learned to attempt to maximize profit and minimize loss while helping to provide a healthy and safe work environment for dozens of employees. I work in a convivial atmosphere that encourages its employees to make a home and family from their job. My owners take pride and pleasure from having a staff of extended family rather than nameless minions. I have been encouraged to consider the human side of supervising rather than simply the dollar side

What I dislike about the company

I sometimes find myself at odds with my owner operators and the number of supervisors we have for the size of our establishment. I have always felt that there should be one voice when a decision is finalized. I don't like dissension or an environment where the management policies are discussed in the presence of employees. I've found myself guilty of engaging in this type of gossip as a result. I would also prefer to have a greater hand in the purchasing of supplies and inventory but in a facility so small, purchasing is often highly audited from week to week.
