Company Culture

This company cares only about their profits. And that's employees as disposable the type of company that even though nobody in admin is a veteran they take veterans day off paid for admin but force the veterans to worn uncompensated

Support from management

They had one good manager there but he cared about the employees and refused to cover up the store manager and her brothers illegal activity.

Career Development

Unless you are a suckup there is no advancement you might make it to an hourly supervisor but as stated before that's when the store manager really begins to treat you like garbage.

Overall compensation for your work

One of the lowest paying places around. Will promise a rase after 90 days but in fact you will be waiting over a year and if you are an excellent employee who finds a better paying job they might try to match it but if you accept the wait until your other offer expires and triple your workload and really begin to act like they own you.

Work-Life Balance

If you work for them they own you. You will work when your told to (ever changing hours and days off) and can only take time off if the store manager feels like approving it

Suggestions for improvement

  • This place needs to get rid of that store manager that's been there since their first store. She is the biggest reason of them being a failed employer and they should actually care about their employees

What I like about the company

Some of the admin were OK. We had a great Assistant Manager for a long time until the store manager screwed him and we had good associates. But with them screwing over that manager there is really nothing left.

What I dislike about the company

The greed. The fact that the store manager was so close with the owners she could literally break the law and they didn't care. The pay was low. The work schedule was horrible for such a small team. Just overall a bad experience. Take your energy and money to True Value

Company Culture

This company, like most, is really only interested in their own success, and if they do at all prioritize the well being and precious lives of those who must work for them, the lives of these people are not their number one priority, you can be sure of that. The proof is in the way they're structured. Almost like a prison. The company likes to emphasize how successful they are and would like to become, all of their great achievements and accomplishments, and also how you too should make it your life purpose everyday you wake up to prioritize them and their success by making your whole life about them. Live, breathe, and dream the company. And if you don't, you're ungrateful for your job and are a failure in the eyes of these self-interested, greedy, delusional people in control. Companies like these, like most actually, truly do not care about the meaning of life, only their own successes, and they will brainwash - or at least try to - people into believing that they are being offered a great opportunity by getting the chance to work for them. No amount of money is worth it if it means selling your soul. None.

Support from management

Management in my experience did try to help, but what they failed to realize was the unrealistic expectations that are set by the company. People have to make so many health sacrifices in order to succeed here, and that's not right.

Teamwork

There is no teamwork because it is a very competitive environment. People become like working robots, losing their humanity and empathy if having any at all to begin with, just to make their 'rates'.

Freedom to work independently

Freedom to work independently is all you have here, but you're also trying to stay out of the way of the others who work here because you know they're trying their very hardest to make their rate and if you're in their way, or they're in your way, you or they just messed up making rate that day. It's not a healthy environment to be in at all. Physically or mentally.

Gender Equality

This company has such a high turn over rate they'll take anybody, so of course they have to treat everyone equal. But on my first day I over heard a sexist remark coming from a guy who worked there who was talking to a co-worker/friend. He noticed the new hires (me included) were all girls I suppose, and told his friend about how the company only likes to hire girls for the 'order filling' position because of the minimal physical requirements (supposedly) the job had. I looked at him and he looked at me, knowing I heard what he said. He was probably a little embarrassed that I heard him, but what he should have been more embarrassed about was the fact that the company hired him for the same position as all the girls that worked there... since he notices these things in the first place.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Brain dead, mindless sheep.

Work-Life Balance

There is no balance. If you want to throw away your life and waste your potential, miss out on real life, miss out on seeing those you love on holidays, if you want to barely have time to relax after work, and if you want to be confined in a building that has you trapped behind cement walls, a few windows, and bars all day, or if you would not like to be able to escape to your car on breaks just to escape it all for a few minutes to catch your breath and slow your heart rate down, then this is the perfect place for you.

Inclusive / Diverse

I would say it's diverse, but most people there were all the same despite different cultures and backgrounds. Brain dead sheep who are only looking out for themselves and their pack and who just nod yes to whatever the company says so and then act like it's all great despite them being on the verge of a heat stroke on a daily basis. Most people were rude and had a poor attitude and were not considerate at all. Maybe a perfect match for the company. It's definitely not a job for anyone who has a soul.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Westlake has a great culture and work environment, but I worry that it’s losing sight of its original purpose— to be a hardware store. Our inventory is becoming overly diverse and unrelated to our brand in all the wrong places, full of cheap or overpriced impulse buys vs the products customers are actual coming to us for. We have tried to become small Walmart’s or Menards and I don’t think it’s to our advantage. I have dozens of small children’s toys but I don’t carry the size of brad nails a contractor needs, and that can be off putting.

What I like about the company

I’ve been with the company 5 years and have spent half that time being developed for management or in a supervisory position/management. Starting pay may not be the best but there are opportunities for raises and full time employees enjoy ample paid time off. My coworkers have either worked with me for years or I have hired them and we form a supportive and friendly group.

What I dislike about the company

I don’t think my company will stay competitive long if they can’t support a strong enough payroll to hire more quality employees when several fast food chains pay hire wages to start. We are also lagging behind in store technology, making daily activities inefficient or even frustrating.
