Company Culture

Too much pressure to meet quotas

Support from management

Too much pressure to meet quotas

Teamwork

I did not feel there was any encouragement to work together.

Freedom to work independently

Too much focus on quality, not enough on quality of work.

Internal Communication

Company was more concerned about making money than taking care of people and their problems.

Gender Equality

More male supervisors than female.

Attitude towards older colleagues

When their productivity dropped off they were strongly encouraged to retire.

Career Development

Only to select people that the supervisors favored.

Overall compensation for your work

I felt I received a decent pay.

Office / Work Environment

Environment was cramped, too many people working in a small area.

Environmental Friendliness

They more or less complied with government regulations regarding separating waste resources.

Work-Life Balance

I never felt that they were family friendly.

Company Image

You may want to note that I told you in the beginning this was FORMER employer. I am not with them anymore because of their attitudes.

Job Security

All of the positions at my level were on the basis of meeting a quota, no matter how the rules changed. I would not judge my numbers to meet that quota.

Handicapped Accessibility

I do not recall seeing any handicap facilities, but this was not open to the public, this was an employee only area.

Workplace Safety

Minimal training.

Challenging Work

It was interesting because we processed insurance claims, but it was also frustrating because we had to deny people that had legitimate crises because they did not submit claims properly. Or their insurance would not cover their life's loss.

Inclusive / Diverse

Supervisors informed employees of what their opinions would be.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Without becoming pollyannish, I doubt anything that I would say would make a difference. It appeared to be the normal or standard operating procedure of all businesses in the insurance industry. But if I had any influence to change things, it would make the environment more friendly towards the employees to do the jobs properly, and more compassion towards their policyholders.

What I like about the company

The View out of the common work area was pleasant. Co-workers were not unpleasant.

What I dislike about the company

My main contention was the quota system they used for processing insurance claims. There were rules that we were not allowed to violate under threat of being fired, yet we were unofficially encouraged to violate those rules in order to meet the quotas.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Functions and information spread across multiple computer systems need to be consolidated. The company should invest in paying more attention to the needs of their customer service reps. The customers full experience with the company is handled via paper mail or over the phone to customer service, so if the customer needs help with something the customer service reps are their only go-to, so these reps need to be provided simple, fast, and effective tools and training to assist. Often due to poor internal communication with other departments and poorly written or outdated policies the staff struggle with even the most basic customer assistance. The company rolls out new programs or updates to “help” the reps but often these upgrades make things more complicated or simply do not apply to anything meaningful. It seems the higher tiers in this company have lost sight of what the bulk of their customer facing staff actually do. There is a huge disconnect between the “higher ups” who make the rules and provide the equipment and processes, and the “worker ants” on the bottom who use the equipment and processes. Staff are provided one survey a year in which to voice their needs and concerns, but it’s not clear if these are ever read by anyone.

What I like about the company

Pays well and has nice facilities to work in. On site gym and cafeteria. Good employee benefits.

What I dislike about the company

Company requirements, policies, and employee expectations are worded using vague or contradictory terms, and can be located in multiple internal computer programs and websites, but can read differently on each one. Too many computer systems are involved in performing even the simplest task (eg: having to compare and contrast between scraps of info spread across 5 different billing programs that each require separate security logins just to answer a customers question “how much do I owe on this months bill?”, or having to go through 3 programs and multiple logins and complex steps to update a customer phone number), and the required programs that employees use daily (even programs to clock in and out of your shift) are constantly being changed without much notice or any training on new versions (the training is often in the form of videos you watch at your desk, but managers rarely allow time for this). Urgent company memos, news, and updates are sent in the form of internal emails and staff can expect to get about 60 of these a day, mixed in with countless other emails that don’t even pertain to their department, and managers expect every email read in detail ASAP on threat of termination, but dont allow staff time to do this and do not allow staff to read work emails during breaks. This makes for a VERY stressful work environment where success is often based on favoritism. If you can survive there they do pay very well, and have many good employee benefits (except their employee health insurance, which is awful).

Suggestions for improvement

  • For one, I would most definitely allow other health professions to be in management. Secondly, I think there needs to be more of an emphasis on health and wellness for employees. While we have a fitness center on the property, it's sub par compared to most. We are a healthcare company for heaven's sake. They should care more about our health by paying for a fitness center membership or having more wellness events by professional staff, by having contests for GOOD prizes. And lastly, I do believe that health PTO should be separate from vacation PTO. If I have to go to the doctor, I have to take PTO. And that's not really a vacation at all. But most of all, other professions should have the opportunity to be in leadership.

What I like about the company

I adore working with the members. Some of them are so sweet and enrich my life so much. I've had a good mentor there that I appreciate. I am so grateful for the bonuses we receive each year; they help so much. I love most of the people I work with. There are some very talented and sweet people there.

What I dislike about the company

The communication is lacking. For one, I work for a subsidiary of Aetna, but I have to login to a firewall each time I want to view my paycheck or ask for time off. I feel like some of the operation managers are not always transparent. Sometimes things happen, and they won't tell us what is going on. We've lost many accounts, and it's depressing. We had to let go of many good people, and it seems like my position is sometimes in danger. The CEO just does not have good optics in the news, and he acts like it too. We got a tax exemption, and that should have gone to the employees but instead it went into the upper level management's pockets. Probably the worst thing about the company is that there is no way to move up unless you are a nurse. While nurses are wonderful, there are other healthcare profession is that can be in management and are in different companies. I've worked here for 5 years and not moved up at all, and I do an excellent job. It kind of makes you not care about working hard.
