Company Culture

I believe what corporate is trying to achieve is on the right track but little to none is applied on the actual ships.

Support from management

I tried to explain to higher management my point of view and I felt completely disregarded and not taken seriously

Teamwork

I truly believe everyone on the ships work extremely hard. Yes there are some people that work harder than other but nothing would get done without the teamwork that is required.

Freedom to work independently

As a manager I believe I had some autonomy however, many described it as babysitting when it came to the stewards.

Internal Communication

This was my biggest problem. When working onboard, you get paid but otherwise you don't. I was sent home after only one week on my second rotation after my placement manager had told me I would get at least 5 weeks. She said the GM told her I was ready to go home and instead of asking directly she just took him at his work which wasn't even true because I never knew nor talked to the guy.

Gender Equality

One of the reasons I decided to leave was due to sexual harassment. Many describe this as "boat life" and whatever happens doesn't affect your "real" life. When advancements were not reciprocated, working was very challenging as the person I was supposed to work with would be uncooperative.

Career Development

2 coworkers were being trained as GMs and had been with the company 1-2 years.

Overall compensation for your work

Meals and stay is covered. Getting the pay check is great however, when you do the math, you are getting paid about $12/hr which for a 15 hour work day is not the best.

Office / Work Environment

I like the environment but depending on which ship you worked, you were either working in small spaces and having to pick up the slack of managers that left before you.

Work-Life Balance

You are working a lot of hours. You do get a break but the one or two hours of break is nothing compared with the 15 hours you are working.

Company Image

If the things being taught by corporate were followed the image would be even better

Job Security

Ships dont sail all year and you can/will be advised to file for unemployment for the 2-3 months when no ships operate.

Handicapped Accessibility

Some ships have elevators and all have a couple of handicap rooms

Workplace Safety

I never felt unsafe when sailing or at ports. However, because you work at a place that deals with the tide, there's many time you might be bumping into things or in the kitchen you can cut yourself. When such instances happen, if you have no insurance (in most cases as the price it's outrageous) you are on your own and if the boat needs to leave, you have to find your own way back to the ship.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Listen to other manager instead of just the GM. Value the stewards more.

What I like about the company

The vision and atmosphere corporate wants all boats to follow.
The ability to travel is a great perk.

What I dislike about the company

Long hours. Feeling under appreciated. Sexual harassment.
