Support from management

Yes! There was plenty of management around. From boss to shift coach to team leader and many many more "management" positions that i can't even think of the name of because I didn't even know why we needed that kind of "manager" haha

Teamwork

Absolutely! But of course you have some people who just can't work well with others. And then you have the people that tell on everyone for no reason

Freedom to work independently

Yes, a majority of the jobs were by yourself, still working as a team on a line, but by yourself

Internal Communication

Yes, we had meetings at the beginning of every shift every morning. Also had town hall meetings to let emoloyees state any problems or concerns every couple of months

Gender Equality

They treated women the same as men. Of course certain people were favored, but I dont think it was because of their sex, it was more or less a "who worked harder" thing

Attitude towards older colleagues

Yes! @

Career Development

They offer to send you to school and pay for it if interested in Furthuring your career. And if you were not planning to make ALC your career and had an idea for a better career in the future and have a serious plan, they will help you to achieve any goal! No matter what they are!

Overall compensation for your work

Yes! They pay very well.Everyone eventually makes the same, no matter how good/bad you are.

Office / Work Environment

Yes comfortable mostly. Its a candy factory so the temp isn't controlled for the employees so you kind of just had to deal. It wasn't very hot or very cold but if it did get hot there was not much we could do about it.

Environmental Friendliness

They are HUMONGOUS about the environment. They give 16 paid volunteer hours a year. They are working on becoming a zero waste facility. They do tons of stuff for the community as well!

Work-Life Balance

Yes all is well until busy season and tons of over time would come in to play. That's not always a bad thing though

Company Image

I loved being an employee at ALC. I was very proud to be a part of a company that is trying to change the world, one piece of licorice at a time

Job Security

I did! I knew i wasn't going anywhere because I knew that they knew I was a good, hard, dedicated worker.

Handicapped Accessibility

Yes! Bathrooms were set up for handicap

Workplace Safety

Yes! They have a system. If you get hurt, or even ALMOST get hurt (near miss) it must be reported asap. You have to fill out a paper and tell what happened and how. Then you would have to give a counter measure. Like how it could have been prevented or how to fix the problem. And if it were serious they would come up with a counter measure asap! They also have safety committee

Challenging Work

I think the hardest part of the whole job was dealing with the other employees

Inclusive / Diverse

Yes! Ages ranged from 18 to 68 im pretty sure

Suggestions for improvement

  • I would definitely get rid of a few of the "slackers" and the "troublemakers". I would make a rule that EVERYDAY,everyone , even team leads would have to find 1 person that stood out to them, and let them know how good of a job they are doing. I honeslty feel like when someone feels noticed and/or appreciated, they will more than likely try harder, and make it a goal to get noticed again. Thats how I am anyway.

What I like about the company

I worked there for 4 years. Topped out very quickly (2 years) got a decent Christmas bonus every year and also a bonus in July (if topped out) for cost of living. They are very passionate about their workers, if you do your job they will take care of you. It's probably close to one of the easiest jobs ive ever had in my life. You just have to know how to work with other people and not be a slacker. Work your butt off and you will get somewhere in life and make some money while doing it. I really miss working there and plan to go back in the future.

What I dislike about the company

I Just wish they had a different point system.. Or different way to go about absences when involving sick babies, or even just being sick in general. I don't like that they don't accept ANY type of Doctors slip. But, most factories need point systems or else they wouldn't be able to maintain and run a successful business if people were just not showing up everyday, with no warning. People would most definitely be missing a lot more knowing there was no consequences!

Company Culture

The owners and senior management talk big about a great culture but it's really not there.

Support from management

How can you get support from management (Marketing) when the VP doesn't even know how to do her own job?

Attitude towards older colleagues

In the past year, the company has let go 10% of it's office staff - all over age 50

Career Development

Company is too small and budget constrained to provide any real career development. Plus, many managers, including some VP's, aren't experienced enough or sharp enough to provide any career development.

Overall compensation for your work

Pay for office staff is generally 20% below market rate. That's company "policy".

Office / Work Environment

New headquarters office lacks character. Very drab and cold.

Work-Life Balance

It's fairly easy if you're a favorite -you're not held accountable and you work maybe a 7 hour day.

Job Security

Job security is very uncertain. Company very unexpectedly lets people go randomly.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Get rid of dishonest and incompetent VP's (Marketing). Marketing has had 100% turn-over in three years, some positions have turned every year, yet the department leader is the same. Hmmm? How hard is that to figure out?

What I like about the company

401-k match

What I dislike about the company

CEO, VP of Marketing

Application questions

  • It was very unstructured. The VP of Marketing was really immature and unprofessional given her age. They made a big deal about their "new" office but it looked cheap and really simple to me. Mo big deal! I've worked in far much nicer offices in the La Porte area.
