Too many senior management people and not enough workers. Workers that are knowledgeable and do a good job only get replaced by someone who will work cheaper. They have gone from a nice, non-profit organization to a greedy and ridiculously sinister company. Evaluations are not always based on your ability but on whether you are liked or not. You need to be a person who always agrees with senior managers and directors to work here.
Support from management
Having to answer to so many is ridiculous. One person can answer to 5 or 6 people. Open door policy is advertised but once you go to someone it is used against you. Supervisors will out right lie to save their own skin. HR no longer assists/supports employees with internal issues.
What few good employees are left work together well. However, the constant turnover in staff makes it difficult to build teamwork.
Departments within the company keep secrets from every other department. No transparency which would make for an overall better company.
A department can make internal changes to their process which is not relayed to other departments but will be affected by their change. Lack of important and updated information is a major issue.
Office / Work Environment
Rules are not followed. People on phones, social media, doing online shopping and show up late for work and nothing is done. Employees are not reprimanded for calling out excessively per company policy.
The balance is good until work backs up. Then you are told to work mandatory OT. They can't make you work OT, but your evaluation will reflect that you did not support your team or overall goals of the organization if you don't do exactly what they say when they say it.
The organization's good image is fading away. They are trying to update too many systems at one time and it is causing customers to go elsewhere. Directors are making decisions on issues that are not even in their department and for which they have no experience. They put on a good show.
Not secure. People in key positions are let go and nothing is announced about them being gone. Every year before evaluation time it is like a revolving door with employees being released. They let good, honest, knowledgeable and hard workers go just to replace them with temps or offer the position for less money to a new hire.
Being in the biological industry and being ISO certified brings with it a need for very detail oriented employees. Do not compare working at ATCC with any other customer service based company.
Inclusive / Diverse
Upper management and directors will listen to what you have to say/offer but it is usually one of their own ideas that are put into action. They don't listen to the worker bees who do the job everyday. They assume they know all even though you are an expert in your field.
Suggestions for improvement
- Improvement would come if they would stop letting the director of operations and the director of supply chain make all the decisions for the company. Though there are many other directors those two are making decisions across the organization. People are too afraid to speak up because they are afraid of losing their jobs. The Board needs to have meetings with the employees instead of just with top management. Too many things are kept from the board members so poor decisions are made. The board members should not be a secret society.
What I like about the company
I like what the company does to support scientific research.
What I dislike about the company
I dislike what the organization has become over the past 5 years. It used to be a very nice place to work. You knew your opinions and good work mattered but now they are money hungry and really don't care about how internal failures with systems and such affect the customer.
There are far too many supervisor and upward positions. Evaluations are completed by supervisors and they couldn't do your job for an hour if you paid them. All management personnel that are evaluating a person's ability should be able to perform all tasks of the person they are evaluating.
They spent way too much money on things like ice cream socials, pie tasting in the fall, company holiday party and such. People can get their own ice cream and pie. Treat people like adults and not kids. Give the money spent on such things to deserving people in their paycheck now that earned sick time and vacation time has been cut!
