Support from management
Most of the time I get the support I need.
Fosters a collaborative environment
Freedom to work independently
Mostly trusts us to work independently, but sometimes our free work time can be too structured.
Overall, good communication
Attitude towards older colleagues
Room for movement up on the salary schedule.
Overall compensation for your work
Great pay for teachers in Ankeny!
Office / Work Environment
We need to do more recycling and be more mindful of wasting resources.
Overall good, but sometimes I feel pressured to not take time off of work.
Must be handicap accessible because we are a government building.
Teaching is a very challenging profession and has high demands.
Inclusive / Diverse
I think we value diversity but have less due being located in a suburb.
Suggestions for improvement
- More personalization. The head of our district says he cares about every employee as an individual, yet some of the practices that have been implemented make us feel that is not true. We realize our district is getting bigger, which makes it harder to treat people as individuals. However, we simply want our hard work to be recognized and rewarded.
What I like about the company
I have worked for Ankeny Community Schools for 13 years. It was my first job out of college and I plan to work her until retirement. I feel very lucky to work in Ankeny because their hiring process is difficult. The teachers and other people I work with are amazing. The drama between colleagues is extremely minimal. They have great benefits and salaries. I have been able to move up on the salary schedule easily to do incentives for obtaining my master's degree. I will say that, since teacher collective bargaining became illegal, some of the benefits and opportunities have not been as good. However, our district still works with our teacher association to ensure that our teachers are overall happy. They want to retain professional teachers. I love working in Ankeny!
What I dislike about the company
In recent years, we as employees have felt more pressure from the district to decrease our time off, even though we may have hundreds of days saved up. Its just a little frustrating for those of us with small children who typically need a little more time off.
