Company Culture

There is a large pay discrepancy in my current job. Those that are new hires are positive, those that have been around a while are not.

Freedom to work independently

Even though we have work days with no students, we still have to report. People are sent from the board of education to check the school parking lots to make sure staff are there.

Attitude towards older colleagues

I've seen teachers who want to change schools but due to their age they are not hired elsewhere.

Overall compensation for your work

Not compared to new teachers. There is a huge pay inequity

Office / Work Environment

Temperatures at controlled by central office, not in each school.

Work-Life Balance

There are high demands of teachers and they are expected to give up time after hours for their students.

I used to be. They don't value teachers who have put in years for them.

I have tenure.

There are a lot more demands of teachers now than when I started almost 15 years ago.

  • Restructure pay to be fair (since the county council approved the money) Principal evaluations

I earned tenure. I have very good benefits.I have the option to receive my pay over 26 pays (summer reserve).Summers offSet scheduleMake a difference in kids lives

Company Culture

Working there was significantly better than in North Carolina, but ultimately, I was undervalued.

Overall compensation for your work

As I mentioned, years of being in a pay freeze and then they let richer, easier schools vote to take away our challenge pay. It made me resentful.

Mice and lots of heating/cooling problems.

Challenging Work

I worked at a “challenge” school (and after a six year pay freeze, they took away our challenge pay).

Suggestions for improvement

  • I would eliminate block schedules and fire the principal at my old school. He is one scandal away from joining the ranks of the “Me Too” movement.

What I like about the company

I loved the kids, even with the rough kids making things challenging, I had the privilege of meeting some amazing young people who will make the world a better place.

What I dislike about the company

I disapprove of how the board budgets the county. They need to prioritize meeting the promised contracts.

Most of the staff turned out the lights when no one was in the room.

People think that teachers get off work early. In order to do my job properly, I did't leave work until after 5 or 6.

Educating children is always tough. You need to approach each child in a way that is as unique as they are.

Suggestions for improvement

  • I would like my boss to plan a day of activities for my students, provide feedback for their work, communicate with parents, attend meetings, and get it all done during the allotted time in our work day.

What I like about the company

I loved seeing the expressions on my students' faces when they solved a problem. I enjoyed running our school's Science Fair. Returning after work to participate in after school activities was enjoyable. Helping out at the Fall Festvals on the weekends let me see my students in a different light.

What I dislike about the company

I wish we didn't have to attend as many meetings. You were expected to do more, but we're not given time during the day to get it done.
