While supervisors of one department strive to be fair and enhance the work experience, upper management secretly question employees, and create a feeling of uncertainty and mistrust.
Support from management
Upper management undermines supervisors' goals and actions, causing negative and unclear work atmosphere.
Although teamwork among individual employees is exercised in a positive manner, the division between departments created by management makes for a feeling of unfairness.
Freedom to work independently
Some employees have a fair ditribution of workload, while others are shown obvious favortism, and never have to do their fair share.
Unfortunately, upper management makes its own rules as they go along. There is no emplyee handbook, and employees weekly work schedules and hours change with no notice. The employee is left "in the dark" as to what the plan will be the following day.
Women and men are treated on an equal level for advancement and job duties, however, once again, favotism is always a a factor.
Attitude towards older colleagues
There is no discrimination of age for employment, and senior associates receive equal chance for hire. However,
There is possibilty for advancement, and training is available, however compensation is not accompanied at the same time, and the chain of command is very unclear.
Overall compensation for your work
Wages are minimal, and work can be demanding. Raises are annual and minimal. Some structuring of personnel has allowed a few employees to rise above this norm. There are no health benefits, but there is an IRA program and vacation pay after one year employment. Salaries are paid on time.
Office / Work Environment
Once again, it is such a shame that ownership will not invest in proper, up-to-date systems, work stations, or air conditioning to make it a comfortable work environment in the shipping department. There is also not proper ventilation or break room space, and seems not to be a concern by ownership.
This subject is not very applicable to the business, except that when it's hot, basic fans are supplied. When it is cold, basic heaters are supplied. There is little concern for environmental issues.
Vacation days, and requested time off are adequately considered and generally granted, except during the noted busy season, in which the employees are aware of.
If empolyees talk fondly of the company, it seems to be out of fear of being put on the unfavorable list. As a part of management, I always did my best to support the employees and boost morale with a positive attitude because I cared about the people, and it feels good to be appreciated.
Ownership does have concern for maintaining positions for emplyees, however hours can be eliminated with no notice.
Overtime is also expected with no notice.
The company does comply with minimal standards, however there are no disabled personnel, but I believe they would comply if necessary.
There are random safety meetings to address concerns, and OSHA has been notified in the past of exposure to exhaust fumes fire exit concerns. Basic measures have been taken for minmal passing standards.
This is more a personal question, which reflects an employee's own sense of accomplishement. There are no rewards from management for a job well-done or goals accomplished. I made my own sense of feeling ethically proud of always doing the best job I could.
And there are many associates who exemplify good work ethics.
Inclusive / Diverse
The goals are set forth by ownership and upper management. Support for diverse opinions are only supported if it suits the monarchy of management.
Suggestions for improvement
- An employee handbook is a must for guidelines for the what the company proclaims, and what is expected by the employee. Regular communication meetings by levels of management, and mutual respect by departments would allow a more positive feeling of respect. Upgrading equipment would allow the employees to complete their jobs more efficiently.
What I like about the company
The hours of operation made it possible to maintain a family life.
The teamwork and comradity by the shipping department is solid, and emplyees are friendly and courteous to eachother.
What I dislike about the company
Ownership and management had very poor communication skills and respect for employees. Obvious favortism is shown towards specific employees on a consitent basis. Improvements in work conditions are made in only dire need events/situations. Raises in pay are seldom, and not enough, considering the work that is expected to be completed.
