I was contractor working on wireless communication projects. I have over twenty years of experience in the field. I was told repeatedly that I was just a contractor, I could be fired at any time and my role was strictly limited to narrow technical issues. That last point is actually important in that I have never seen a technical issue that did not affect the business case. Except for the most trivial issues, it is impossible to confine technical issues. Companies that asset that position are deeply mistaken
Support from management
I have mentioned the type of support management gave above. The style of management was primitive. It was a variation of top-down don't ask questions approach. That might have worked in with a generation of ex-military from World War II (I doubt it), but had no relevance to identifying and addressing engineering issues.
