A lot of bad talk behind people's backs. Propaganda and misinformation run rife. A depressing environment. No support from middle management.
Support from management
Management sets employees against each other. Takes sides based on personal interest. Plays a close "poker hand" during communications.
Once again, employees are pitted against each other to compete for favors with management. Behind the back insults aplenty.
Freedom to work independently
The best jobs are handed to personal favorites, but with good skills one could often overcome difficult tasks.
Upper and middle management very secretive. Lies and manipulation very common.
An equal opportunity employer.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Anybody over 50 was marginalized, made fun of and eventually pushed out at first opportunity.
A dead end.
Overall compensation for your work
Starting salaries not bad, but raises come slowly and are small, especially after "topping out". Health insurance is partially covered, and not a particularly good plan. It is only offered after one becomes "full time", which, depending on the individual could take months. A full year in one case I witnessed. A few times we were asked to wait a few days before cashing our paychecks. Christmas bonuses are generally small and sometimes non-existent without explanation.
Office / Work Environment
Office and warehouse very messy. Lights/electric and plumbing/facilities in constant disrepair.
Some care and concern toward local art community.
Difficult to maintain more than 30-32 hours in 5 day work week. Several furlough days given throughout year. Pressure to drive long hours and overnight on out of state trips. Expected to stay in "cheap" motels to save money. On a positive note, it is usually easy to get unpaid time off.
Many employees are afraid to speak up while still employed. Ex-employees, without fail, have little good to say.
Even though I worked there for years there was often an atmosphere among the general labor of being let go, laid off or the business going under at any time.
The business is located on ground level, so I guess that applies. No particular features.
Employees in general tended to be very careful individually, but the atmosphere was often chaotic, messy and, at times, dangerous. OSHA would have a field day.
Art handling is a somewhat challenging and interesting industry. AWFAS doesn't take on as much challenging work as other companies. Most exciting jobs are given to manager's favorite person.
Inclusive / Diverse
Hard to say. Personal preferences of upper management unknown. Middle management makes judgments based on personal favoritism.
Suggestions for improvement
- Managerial restructuring. Learn basic communication skills.
What I like about the company
The type of work. Some of my coworkers. Occasional flexibility with hours.
What I dislike about the company
Unsafe working conditions. Feeling of insecurity almost daily. Lack of any kind of reasonable communication and respect from management.
