Suggestions for improvement
- I would completely re-evaluate the time off policy to make it more in line with the industry standard. For one thing, we're in the funeral industry and we offer no bereavement leave. That is positively asinine!
What I like about the company
Shortly after starting my job here, I lost my father very unexpectedly. My coworkers, even people I didn't really know well, rallied around me and my family. That was my first real taste of how this company's culture plays into treating one another like family. That's the biggest reason why I've stayed even though there are some other issues.
What I dislike about the company
The most frustrating part of my job as a working parent is that we have an incredibly archaic time off policy. We earn vacation, but no additional time off. We have no sick days or anything like that. We're also not technically allowed to come in early or stay late to make up time. Time off can only be earned or taken in 1/2 day increments, which means if you have an appointment, you have to burn at least 1/2 day of vacation to do it. It makes it very difficult to maintain a work/life balance and as a result, I've had to postpone routine medical care for myself multiple times. We also have no bereavement leave, so vacation time must be used. If you do not have the vacation time to take, you must take unpaid time off and in addition, be written up.
