I like about the employer

Very little. There were a few people there that I considered decent human beings, but none of them were in management.

I dislike about the employer

Sexist, Homophobic, and Transphobic remarks, even from the CEO. Gender Essentialism massively reinforced through gendered dress codes, general rhetoric, and company policy. I and the only other LGBT individual I met there both felt constantly unsafe. The only women they've ever hired on to their upper leadership is a VP, and they didn't get her till the mid 90's. Even then, they parade her around as an example of how "progressive" they are... which is quite a joke when the CEO greets every new hire himself by joking about the "wall of old white men" where every former CEO is pictured.
Employees are not treated like adults. Strict hours including delineated lunch breaks. Going out to your car for something you forgot requires you to ask your supervisor for permission, lest it be held against you.
On a visit to a branch, the branch manager joked to me (a Male presenting individual) that, in a hypothetical car accident between spouses on the same coverage, the woman would be at-fault because "of course it's the woman's fault".
The CEO, in a meeting with new hires six months into their job, asked us "What is a 'Man Cave'?" When a young woman gave a decently satisfactory answer (Something like "A place a man claims in a home as their own, to get away from others for a while"), the CEO responded dismissively with "That's such a woman answer", going on to clarify that the 'correct' answer is that it's a place that men are *forced* to hide in to get away from their wife and children.
The culture there precluded making HR complaints regarding these incidents, as I feared retaliation. Now that I've left, I've made these complaint clear. I'm certain they are being ignored as sour grapes of a former employee, regardless of the circumstances of what I consider my escape from that company.

Suggestions for improvement

  • More staff is needed. Unmanageable work load equates to poor customer service.
