Again, it's not that management doesn't want to support you, but reality is reality. Management is under tremendous pressure to complete an aggressive agenda every quarter. Consequently, after nearly 4 decades in banking I learned the better you know the landscape and develop your own network of contacts the more value you are to management and the more they will help you get the extra mile you need because they know you are self-motivated and pushing forward on your own.

Goes without saying, the more you can successfully contribute on your own toward stated goals, the more value you bring to the team

I'm an older colleague so I'm probably over-sensitive and biased in the direction of self-interest. In my time at the bank, I don't actually know of any situation of formal age discrimination. I wouldn't count my answer on this question.

Work-Life Balance

In My Opinion, the bank tries to provide focus on work-life balance and certainly pays lip service, but reality gets in the way. There are deadlines and other constraints that must be dealt with and the reality is that when a choice needs to be made about catch the 5:30 train and putting in the addition 4 or 5 hours needed to make the morning deadline....well you make the call.

What I like about the company

It is a US Bank and well managed at the Senior Level. Bank of America is a globally recognized Financial Services Brand with an excellent reputation. It was a Company I was proud to be employed by and work for

What I dislike about the company

I think middle management (in my areas of expertise) leaves a good deal to be desired, maybe the worst of any bank I've worked for over 40 years. It is getting better...but in my opinion, senior management is called to the rescue or needs to be directly involved in the day to day far too often.

Bad moral. Employees don't seem happy other than having a job. Constant layoffs in certain states make employees lose loyalty to the company.

  • I have applied jobs months ago and never heard a word from the company. I called HR a couple of weeks ago and the waiting time was more than an hour. I left a call back number and the person I talked to did not seem to know anything about the questions I asked.

What I like about the company

I’ve onyl once had a bad co-worker, never had a creepy older guy hit on me, and don’t have to deal with angry customers that often. I don’t work in the front so that probably has something to do with it.

I do dislike how we handle angry customers, they’re kinda just shuffled through and shoved away.

  • Upgrade all branches. Some have asbestos and do not have a clean and up to date environment. Take a hard look at Market leaders who are bias, show favoritism and do not walk the talk.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Too many "cooks in the kitchen" concerning management - everyone's desire to rise/overtake others creates a cutthroat culture that the employees have to absorb. The company should eliminate many junior managers and focus on creating cohesive goals for teams, not just goals for the sake of creation.

What I like about the company

Compensation is fair, maternity/paternity leave is fair. However, if you are looking to move up in the company it is expected you will not take your entire leave.

What I dislike about the company

Management is absent until things go wrong, heavy "throw someone under the bus" culture, long hours are expected and upward mobility is limited
