You never know if you're going to piss off the owner and get fired.
Support from management
Capricious decisions from top management. They"re used to managing a hotel, not an aerospace company. Rules are announced but never enforced until they want to you, then use breaking the rules as an excuse to deny unemployment insurance.
Attitude towards older colleagues
They hired a lot of older workers--fifties and sixties.
Overall compensation for your work
Wages and salaries are lower than industry average. Benefits change from year to year: one year there was time off between Christmas and New Year, the next year there wasn't. This is a company where a lot of the workers were recruited from the other side of the country, some had wife and children in California, while they lived in Las Vegas, so this meant they couldn't go home for Holidays, and if they used vacation time they lost holiday pay! BUT, 401k employer contributions were fully vested from day one!
Vacation hours can only be taken by scheduling 2 weeks in advance. Sick time, doctor appointments, etc. are part of vacation time. If ANY vacation time is used on the workday before or after a holiday, then holiday pay is canceled.
Bigelow has a terrible image in the aerospace industry. Employees gruymble a lot to themselves. Longer term employees survive by being nearly invisible yes-men.
Yopu never feel thet your employment is secure. You can be fired on a whim. often popsitiond are not given industry standard names. This makes it hard for future employers to know what, exactly, job duties were.
Inclusive / Diverse
Diverse opinions are okay as long as they agree with the owners whims.
Suggestions for improvement
- They need to bring in a general manager who knows how to treat and handle aerospace employees. start letting engineering and aerospace standards govern design.
What I like about the company
401k was matched $0.50 per employee dollar, up to 6% of salary, fully vested from the first day.
What I dislike about the company
They take "at will employment" literally. You never know when the owner will be pissed at you and fire you. Departments were created and dissolved at will, sometimes as an excuse for firing a manager. Engineering manager wouldn't do some things against engineering standards for safety. the owner blew up and started ranting, said he was trying to hold him hostage in his own company, demoted him, said the manager was incompetent, actively started looking for a replacement, but didn't fire him. 2 months later he assigned him and another demoted engineer (both of whom he had said were incompetent) to sit in on all planning meetings as his eyes and ears because they were the only ones he could trust to tell him the truth! They treat engineering staff like hotel maids and desk clerks (most of his management was brought straight over from his hotel business).
