Company markets a good atmosphere but the growth in the last 10 years has created a very acidic enviornment in which it is okay to trample over others if it allows you to elevate your position. Senior management is told the enviornment is one of the greatest in the country, but that is very false. .
Support from management
I believe senior managment wants to provide support, but they rely on the HR department for the feedback and they are convinced by HR that all is good and therefore never try to validate the actual environment.
Similar to the culture teamwork, while publicly promoted is no longer a good aspect of the company. Again, senior managment is told all is good, but they don't actually touch base directly with employees.
Freedom to work independently
For most areas I believe the direct line supervisors are reasonble in allowing employees to work independently.
Company for the most part does a good job of sharing news and updates to employees.
Attitude towards older colleagues
I've experienced and witnessed older employees being terminated directly because of their age. Not performance reasons but more from a budget perspective that terminating an older employee will provide more budget dollars to hire younger employees.
Good is some areas of the company, but training dollars have always been one of the first items cut when budgets get tight.
Overall compensation for your work
Black Hills has been competitive with their salary/wage rates.
Office / Work Environment
As noted previously, the work environment used to be very team oriented, but the company growth has changed the environment into a more individualistic routine, not a team focus.
Being a utility the focus by senior managment has been to ensure the company is enviornmentally friendly.
Work-life balance is on posters over the company properties, but when it comes down to it, job activities are the most important and so what ever sacrafices you need to make are expected to be done.
Is good because the company spends many hours/dollars promoting the image of the company, as many other corporations od as well.
Was good previously, but with the change in culture your job is in jeapordy if it allows someone with ulteria motives to climb the ladder. Do not assume doing a good job will allow you to keep your job.
Company provides handicapped accessibility facilities.
Safety is stressed very storngly accross all areas of the company.
The growth of the company and the constant change in technology has always created a challenging work climate.
Suggestions for improvement
- Senior managment needs to communicate directly with employees rather than relying on what the HR department tells them. This is meeting face to face with employees from time to time. And also realize the employee survey is not accurate because many employees don't feel comfortable that they are in fact answer the questions anonymously.
What I like about the company
The compnay has always provided very good benefits and salary/wages, so I have no complaints in that regard. Growth has always been a factor.
What I dislike about the company
The environment has become very bad and is not the teamwork atmosphere it previously was.
