Cliquey. Favoritism. Its all about how well you perform for the cameras no one is actually paying attention to the employees who are working hard. God forbid, a junior executive points this out. If your bosses boss has decided she likes or doesn't like someone based on five seconds of interaction, then that's that.

Executive training is excellent, unfortunately there is a huge disconnect between how we're told to do it and how it's actually done. This is a truly thankless job. For example, if one of your staff have five weeks of vacation saved and wants to take three weeks off for a major life event, why not just grant it to her? SHe will come back grateful and eager to work for a company who cares about her work/life balance. The alternative is to say no, let her take one week citing rules and an explanation and then she will come back bitter and resentful an hating her direct supervisor whose hands were tied. Favoritism reigns supreme. I would understand if this were based on performance but its based on who sucks up to senior management the best.
