Company Culture

Cares about people. We are a tight knit group in my department.

Support from management

My boss is the best!

Teamwork

We have to rely on each other and trust each other to do our jobs.

Freedom to work independently

I know what I have to do and I do it. No one is looking over my shoulder.

Internal Communication

I don't receive too much feedback.

Gender Equality

In my department I feel it is totally equal. In other places, sometimes I feel there is a lack of women.

Attitude towards older colleagues

There are a lot of older employees and I don't think they have any disadvantages.

Career Development

I have capped out basically. I have a 3/4 time position. I wish I could be full time.

Overall compensation for your work

I feel I am paid enough for the job I do.

Office / Work Environment

I have everything I need provided for me.

Environmental Friendliness

Could do more recycling. Or easier recycling.

Work-Life Balance

My hours are usually pretty good. And I don't have much to do outside work so when I'm done for the day, I can do other things in life.

Company Image

I love this university and my job.

Job Security

Yes I can stay however long I want. I have

Handicapped Accessibility

Could always do a little better with this. But I think we are striving to have it be completely accessible.

Workplace Safety

We went through all the proper trainings.

Challenging Work

It keeps me busy but it's not overwhelming.

Inclusive / Diverse

Sometimes I feel some more liberal thoughts are slightly discouraged. Not from the university as a whole perhaps, but sometimes just in the culture.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Just making sure that everyone has the help they need. My boss is essentially doing the job of 3 people and he is so busy. I think it would be helpful to hire an assistant or do something to help people in this position.

What I like about the company

It is a great community with many people who hold the same values that I do. There are a lot of great people to meet here. I worked in this same position as a student and then when I graduated I continued on. I learn so much every day and this job makes me feel so fulfilled and that I am doing good in the world while also stretching myself.

What I dislike about the company

Just giving people more opportunities to work full time and get benefits. I know with the position I'm in there's a mix of 3/4 time and student employees. I think if you let the 3/4 time work full time we'd have more consistent schedules.

Suggestions for improvement

  • There is not much I would change for the better. The OSHA lady is a little scary, but that's probably a good thing when you have a bunch of college students dealing with biohazards.

What I like about the company

I made a lot of good relationships, mainly with the professor I worked for. He taught me a lot about research, and it really prepared me for work outside of BYU, and for graduate school. I also had some great opportunities to present research at conferences outside of BYU. Furthermore, I got to work with a lot of graduate students and get a lot of experience collaborating with them and other students, which was a very rewarding experience and very valuable in teaching me about the work place.

What I dislike about the company

There really wasn't much I didn't like about working for BYU. The thing is that it was a student job, and I was only part time, so there weren't any benefits, and I was fine with that. For student jobs it is great.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Not limit student-employees to twenty hours a week. Provide free meals for employees when they are on a shift that lasts more than four hours.

What I like about the company

I always felt like what I did actually made a difference. This provided me with a very fulfilling job-life. I felt respected by my bosses. They always understood me and were willing to work with me when differences arose. They were accommodating of my school schedule and were willing to work around that.

What I dislike about the company

I just wish they would allow us to work over twenty hours a week. There were many times when I needed more hours to make ends meet but they were not allowed to provide me with them. That was the most frustrating part of working for BYU.
