Reviews - What employees say

Company Culture

Bright Horizons prides itself on being there for families but does not always consider the well being of their employees. There is barely enough staff to get through the day and schedules are very tight. It feels impossible to call out of work or leave early (when necessary) due to illness, unexpected family issues, or staff's children becoming sick.

Teamwork

Teachers generally work together to find solutions to problems. There is very little help from management to resolve any issues that staff members come across.

Internal Communication

There is little to no communication between management and staff. We are not informed of any changes for the day (whether a staff member is out sick, a food delivery is late, etc) and are often left to fend for ourselves.

Career Development

Little to no chance of moving up within the company.

Overall compensation for your work

Staff are not compensated enough for the high workload that is expected on a daily basis.

Office / Work Environment

Some classrooms control the heat/cold air for other rooms. The temperature needs to be adjusted so all classrooms are comfortable.

Environmental Friendliness

Staff are not always friendly to one another. Problems between staff are not addressed between individuals, nor are they acknowledged by management.

Work-Life Balance

Some staff are allowed to work short shifts while most are expected to work long hours to make up for it. Those with long shifts get a short break since there is not more staff needed to cover longer break periods for staff. Daily staffing is very poorly arranged. Weekly schedules go out the Friday before the upcoming work week. It is difficult to make plans and enjoy free time outside of work.

Job Security

Enrollment of the program is low. If more children do not enroll in the program, staff hours may be cut which would put people in a difficult situation. Some staff may have to leave the company or go to a different location with more work hours to ensure they still have a job.

Workplace Safety

The location is in a huge complex with lots of security. To get into the program, you need a specific code that you are assigned as an employee or someone who is allowed to pick up children.

Challenging Work

Working with children itself is not always easy, but the job is hard when we are not given the support we need.

Suggestions for improvement

  • I would make sure to give back to the employees. Bonuses or gift cards. Parents give to some. But our company has no Xmas parties. No picnics. Only award banquet once a year. No family activities for employees. Just clients.

What I like about the company

Their are so many accomplishments doing this job that are very rewarding. Teaching America s future ! Every day is rewarding. To brighten parents days at work , while helping children with daily struggles of life . Seeing children, older siblings that now attend grade school . I love watching them grow.

What I dislike about the company

With Alot of employees any hr things like paperwork, bank changes. We have snail mail. Although recently Alot of things can be accomplished online . With my location 600 miles away from corporate Alot of benefits are not very good in our location. Example movie tickets for 10$ maybe good on the east coast but here the matinee is 5$ .also gym discounts no pool.

Suggestions for improvement

  • I would suggest paying the teachers more, offer ALL new hires the proper training. I just sat in front of a computer for mine, and my coworker actually was able to go to a different center to be trained before stepping foot in the classroom. I would suggest more in person training opportunities. And I would suggest finding a more efficient way of doing all the documentaion that is required, its time consuming and we aren't given enough time.

What I like about the company

My current director has done a great job at building a sense of community amongst the staff. I love all of the support that the company offers their employees, from discounts on certain things to tuition reimbursement. The company offers back up care so that if my sons center is closed, he is able to come into mine.

What I dislike about the company

I think that the company is unrealistic with their expectations of their teachers, especially for the pay. If we aren't fully staffed, and don't get prep time, how are we supposed to get everything that is expected of us done? I think that there should be trainings for administration on how to professionally communicate with their staff.
