It is hard to trust district level when they do not support you.
Support from management
Middle management is a joke, DMs do nothing to support individual stores and if anything make it more difficult to be an effective manager by giving SMs pointless tasks. I took part in a store opening and the DM literally stood in the middle of the store and got in the way. RVPs do a poor job holding DMs accountable.
There is good teamwork between SMs and within particular stores, but mostly a bureaucracy.
Freedom to work independently
Again, in individual stores workload can be distributed equally, but do not expect support from district or regional level unless you're a $5 million store or above.
Conference calls were a joke, our DM would literally talk over people. DM would call my personal phone and yell at me.
When I resigned, my DM asked me if I was pregnant. I know I wasn't going to get any more opportunities because my management assumed that because of my age and because I am a woman that I would eventually choose family over my career.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Our DM made it very clear she wanted young employees and showed little respect for our tenure staff.
Office / Work Environment
Some store were great, others didn't get much attention. I was fortunate to work with good teams in clean and safe work environments.
Work life balance is non existent, however most retail management jobs consume your life. Management was given a healthy amount of PTO, but most didn't have the opportunity to use it.
Unfortunately, image has gone downhill. Used to be a prestigious brand, very high quality, but under poor management the brand is not what it used to be.
When there is no accountability, DM have to work to fire someone. As long as your store performs ok, you have job security. District and regional positions have been eliminated and added over the last several years.
Generally safe, but would have little to no support from middle management if there were to be an accident or safety issue.
Inclusive / Diverse
Absolutely not. I hadn't heard any management speak out against inclusiveness or diversity, but overall the company lacks it.
