What I like

The HR staff are extremely helpful. When I needed time off for surgery, they ensured I filed the correct paperwork. They assisted in my leave scheduling so I did not lose my insurance or pay.

What I dislike

I can't think of any. We are the best in the business.

Suggestions for improvement

I would improve our physical location. However, there is nothing I would improve.

Company Culture

There is a tremendous sense of family and teamwork in our office. The culture is very positive and supportive of everyone.

We travel a lot for work and that can make keeping a balance difficult.

What I like

I feel that I have become a better pharmacist after working at the BOP. I am very much involved in the healthcare professional team, with providers routinely requesting medication information and advice on proper medication selection.

What I dislike

As with any big company, I sometimes feel that executive/administrative staff are out of touch with concerns/problems of bargaining staff.I would suggest more staff recalls/town hall meetings BEFORE executive staff has made decisions regarding important issues. Most of the time, when we meet to discuss big problems, executive staff are simply telling us what they've already decided to do.

Suggestions for improvement

I would suggest meeting with line staff prior to making decisions that will affect the whole department/institution.

Company Culture

I love my department (pharmacy), however, there are always occasional problems when you're working with a big group of people. I feel that we work together to further the mission very well, though.

Overall compensation for your work

My salary is less than that for retail pharmacists.

Support from management

I love my department (pharmacy), however, there are always occasional problems when you're working with a big group of people. I feel that we work together to further the mission very well, though.

Challenging Work

As a pharmacist, there are inherent challenges associated with my work. I must be diligent when processing and verifying prescription orders.

I’ve worked for this company for 14 years and they continually cut the budget and we lose resources and people

We continually lose employees yet increase our inmate population. It is only a matter of time before something bad happens

Suggestions for improvement

Increase employees and increase the budget

EmployeeWorked at Bureau of Prisons in Lisbon, OH at the time of review.

What I like

The management recognizes hard work and rewards staff for doing a good job. The training both in class and on the job helps prepare you for the environment in which you will be working. The chance to meet new people and form friendships is both available and encouraged. This is a rewarding career in law enforcement. You can enjoy the pride and recognition of being a member of the federal law enforcement.

What I dislike

Like most businesses favoritism and nepotism exist. The bureau continues to try and make its primary aim to advance the field of corrections through insight and learning. They recognize that the need to promote better candidates, not just buddies, is the only way to ensure that they are the top of the correctional field

Suggestions for improvement

Conduct mass shakedowns on a more regular basis. Have executive staff make rounds more often and give input to staff, don’t just criticize and chastise.

What I like

I work with some good guys in sometimes not so good conditions. It’s a job to feel proud of.

What I dislike

It’s a government job and there are plenty of politics to go around. It can be very frustrating. There is a lot of wasted funds and unnecessary positions.

Suggestions for improvement

I would do some major weeding of unnecessary positions and I would update the technology
