Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation experience report

  • 01.Feb 2019
  • Employee

We are on call and they sometime treat us as a number instead of a smart employee who has experience and knows our job

4.06

Company Culture

They are a good company with good benefits, however timeoff is a challenge as you're expected to be on call 24/7

Support from management

Management doesn't really interact with us unless it is about rules and they usally don't know them as well as us

Teamwork

You are dependent on your co workers working hand in hand together to move the trains safely

Freedom to work independently

You and one other are basically on your own for most of the work and rarely interact with management

Internal Communication

They release finacials over the company internet siteand explains them for us

Gender Equality

They never look at gender

Attitude towards older colleagues

People spend their lives at the job some working there for over 50 years

Career Development

I can always look at promotions within the company if willing to move

Overall compensation for your work

I make a good living for being on call

Office / Work Environment

Locomotives are usually clean and temperature controled but you do work in the weather

Environmental Friendliness

They don't recycle as much as the locomotives are basically lived on

Work-Life Balance

It is hard as they want you available and you are expected to be ready to work regardless of life

Company Image

They take care of us most of the time and it is still a job people amaze over

Job Security

They always need train crews

Handicapped Accessibility

In office personel are accomodated but can't for locomotives

Workplace Safety

Youa re always expected to work safely

Challenging Work

The work is usually not challenging, meaning you sit for long hours waiting, however you are working nights and on call so you have to manage your sleep

Inclusive / Diverse

They value experience and safe working above all else

Suggestions for improvement

  • Listen to your employees and work with them to make things better instead of unilaterally making changes and being adversarial to the employees

What I like about the company

They do quite a bit of safety feeds, and want to make sure you are successful by giving you tools like ipads to use

What I dislike about the company

Treat us like human and value our input we want you to be successful and profitable
