Challenging Work

Child protection services is hard. It's extremely personal, emotional, and sometimes we step in at the family's worst moments. Case loads are high and demanding.

Suggestions for improvement

  • More training and development for supervisors and leadership. A more objective way to determine reclassification.

What I like about the company

The company offers many training opportunities year round to educate employees on various topics. Safety is a top priority.

What I dislike about the company

Salary is too low compared with other companies and other states.

Suggestions for improvement

  • It would be good to have more opportunities for training, even after having been with the agency for many years. Often the public and the agency are looking for someone to blame when something goes wrong. It would be good to feel supported, rather than targeted when in a crisis.

What I like about the company

Working for the agency allows me to give back to the community and help those in need. Although the work is sometimes emotionally draining, it is absolutely good to know we are helping the less fortunate and those who are at risk of abuse or neglect. I have had the opportunity to travel and network during training sessions. I have been challenged and offered the opportunity to utilize the skills I have learned over the years.

What I dislike about the company

Working in the field is very difficult and carries with it some risk of physical harm and terrible secondary trauma related to the things workers are exposed to. Although current policies cite the need for support services, they are seldom utilized to help workers cope. Compared to the private sector, the pay scale is quite a bit lower.

  • A continual need for additional employees was and is always needed. The employee turnover rate is extremely high due to lack of workers and/or trained workers, as well as the danger of the position. This is counterproductive to moral and health/safety.

What I like about the company

Excellent training and opportunities to teach clients knowledge and skills.

What I dislike about the company

From the beginning there was animosity by one manager, who was continuously allowed to treat most employees in this manner. The workload was inexcusable, and made it almost impossible for the staff on any level to manage workload or subordinate's. This was counter to policies and safety in communities.

I enjoy working with my current team. It is a position that meets public needs and gives one the feeling of personal success aiding those in our society who need help to survive.

I dislike that the system is "broken" in some ways- allowing public assistance to those who can do for themselves, but have learned to work the system and provide bogus information to get benefits.
