Very positive and casual environment
We stay on the cutting edge of development technology
Suggestions for improvement
- I would reduce the out-of-pocket costs of insurance benefits - premiums and deductibles, maxes, etc. I'd increase 401k match to 100% of first 6%, implement minimum annual salary adjustment of at least 1% and 2 week's bonus pay across the board. I'd negotiate company discounts with Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile if possible.
What I like about the company
At my old company, I felt like my skills were stagnating and I wasn't experiencing the latest development tools and best practices. At CafePress, we keep up with the latest and greatest. We work from home up to 2 days per week and get free snacks and drinks. Everyone is supportive, friendly, and positive. There is paid parental leave and discretionary PTO - which management encourages (I've never been turned down). When I first joined 3 years ago, the company was coming out of a rough phase. They methodically turned things around, rebuilt a positive culture and robust software. We are still not as big as we were in the recent past, but we are poised to grow again. When I first joined, the location was not desirable. One of the most positive changes was moving the headquarters to the Middletown section of Louisville. The location is a short commute from desirable neighborhoods and in the middle of a wide selection of restaurants for lunch or dinner. Once in a while, the company schedules outings, e.g. an escape room challenge, or laser tag, etc. It's not uncommon for a free lunch to be catered from a good local pizza or Mexican restaurant.
What I dislike about the company
Benefits could use improvement. The cost of insurance is significantly higher at CafePress than at my previous employer. The 401k match is reasonable, but also not as high as I once had. CafePress could also negotiate more company discounts, especially on cellular phone service. I've been somewhat disappointed in regular bonuses and salary raises. This has improved somewhat in recent years, but my salary has not risen enough to keep up with inflation.
