The company's stated values (ethics, service, honesty etc) are admirable, even if enforcement in practice is less than consistent.
Support from management
Dependent on location. A couple managers were honest and supportive. My last was a downright toxic leech who took most credit for the site's success despite doing almost zero work and dumping an impossible workload onto everyone else. Upper management (see above comment on oversight) would accept each manager's picture of their own site, true or false, without making any effort to engage with the workers directly.
Again, highly dependent on the assigned site. Each manager ran their own location with next to no oversight, which let them either participate as part of the team or sit around and refuse to do any work. Dissatisfied employees had no recourse except asking to be moved elsewhere (which meant a risk of having a grueling commute or possibly getting dismissed). For the most part, non-managerial employees were uniformly good workers willing to help each other.
Freedom to work independently
Depends whether you have a good supervisor or incompetent micromanager.
When working under contract as part of a site team, it was usually easy to forget there was anyone else out there. We'd get occasional newsletters and visits from upper management, almost none of which had any relevance to me or my job. We may have been the most important level of workers (on account of doing all the actual day-to-day work), but never got asked for opinions, suggestions or feedback of any kind.
There's precious little advancement available in the company itself for anything besides management (though benefits did include tuition assistance).
Overall compensation for your work
The pay was merely adequate and the annual raises were actually insulting (no more than 1-2%). During my several years in this post we got one good holiday bonus, a couple tiny ones (i.e. 100 or less), and most years none at all. Other benefits and PTO were pretty good.
Office / Work Environment
The environment was heavily dependent on each site's host company. Most were at least pleasant and acceptable.
Regular 8-5 hours were consistent as could be with good vacation/sick time. Travel time could get ridiculous, while there was no extra reimbursement for anything under 25 miles. Some years they held an evening meeting/dinner in a very inconvenient location requiring travel & tolls, which we'd be harassed and sometimes threatened over if unwilling/unavailable to attend.
Company follows the travesty known as at-will employment. You can have a superb record with every single person except your own manager, but still get fired over invented problems and patently false accusations.
Suggestions for improvement
- More oversight for people at all levels, not just micromanagement for the workers everything else depends on, and pay commensurate with what work is worth
