Favoritism abounds and there were multiple instances of hostility in several areas.
Support from management
Leadership was not qualified. Direct reports had more experience and education than management and management could not support nor back-up employees - which resulted in overwhelming staff - setting them up for failure.
The department I worked in had a manager that blatantly showed favoritism AND the manager had an unethical relationship with HR therefore no one could ask for help for fear of retaliation. Therefore people would just leave and the problems continued unaddressed.
Communication in my department was siloed. Divide and conquer mentality
Very few minorities in management positions in Florida I don't think there are any or very few minorities in management. In TN it is better because there are women and minorities in management and senior level positions. In NC and SC - few minorities in management and senior positions
Inclusive / Diverse
The manager I worked for constantly made racially questionable comments - specifically AGAINST Black women who worked there and he did not respond to non-Blacks in the same manner. In fact, he had great relationships with non-Blacks - oftentimes engaging in inappropriate jokes, etc. he constantly joked about how big his personnel file was.
Suggestions for improvement
- Fire HR and hire a lawyer with an HR background to head up the department. Have a third party conduct and annual company-wide audit in HR and all other departments by gathering information from the actual employees who are internal customers of hose departments.
What I like about the company
It's a growing organization
What I dislike about the company
HR is not staffed by individuals with HR backgrounds, experience or education and therefore they allow and even engage in behaviors that are inappropriate and unethical. They've even complicitly created hostile work environments.
