Suggestions for improvement
- Training before starting the position. Writeups or other accountability measures for people who are late and fail to arrive on time to relieve the previous shift. A structured schedule for the kids that is adhered to. Better pay, and better options for health insurance. Requiring training to be completed sooner, and offering more trainings. Review of every restraint / incident to make sure the restraint was needed and the situation could not have been de-escalated in another way.
What I like about the company
Helping the children was gratifying while I was there. Seeing them grow and change. The flexible hours and block scheduling were nice so that you could have more days off in a row. We were able to snack on the available food if we wanted. We had regular meetings with management to discuss questions / concerns, and the other people I worked with were friendly.
What I dislike about the company
Most of my coworkers spent the majority of their time surfing the internet on their phones, tablets or laptops. Sometimes they would be nowhere to be found, or literally asleep. There was no training before starting the position. Some people in the orientation meeting I finally went to 2 months after starting had already been working there multiple years. Information about benefits was totally unclear during orientation. The health insurance available offered was not a good value, in my opinion, especially for the salary we were making. I believe we were underpaid compared to other similar positions. There was high turnover, which is not good for the kids’ stability. I believe staff did a lot of inappropriate yelling at the kids, and the program had almost no structure at all. It was a very chaotic place to work.
