Support from management
Managers are "yes men" to the owner. They do not support their team members - and the owner prefers this.
As expected in a normal restaurant environment.
The owner only communicates when you've done something wrong.
I don't see a difference in wages due to gender, but their are very few women employed in the company. Women are not put in management positions and men are kept away from tending bar because the owner feels women should be in that position.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Owner prefers younger employees.
It's a small company and there are very few positions for advancement.
Overall compensation for your work
This really depends on one's position within the company. Servers make excellent money, but support positions are not well-compensated.
Office / Work Environment
Summers here are brutal. No a/c in the kitchen, and the a/c in the front doesn't work well.
The owner does not show a care for the environment at all - and will tell you so. Nothing is recycled. Owner insists on using cans of soda for customers - and will not allow any recycling bin on the property. Cardboard is placed in the dumpster.
Employees are expected to put the needs of the owner first. Co-workers are discouraged from creating friendships with each other: can't even go out for a drink after a rough shift.
Public image of this company is fantastic. CC's has been #1 in upscale dining in Columbia for many years. It's considered one of the best places to eat in Missouri - and among the top in the mid-west region.
Job security is very much non-existent: I have seen the owner fire almost his entire kitchen staff because they went out for a drink after work. I have seen the owner fire an employee because the employee (politely and respectfully) shared a difference of political opinion. I have seen the owner come into the restaurant in a bad mood and threaten to fire someone because the employee showed concern.
There are no jobs for handicapped people here.
Safety, for the most part, is encouraged.
The restaurant is very small and very busy. This creates challenges - especially during certain holidays, etc. Employees can be proud of the food and service they provide.
Inclusive / Diverse
There are very few employees of color. The owner is known to be racist, sexist, and homophobic. This is not a diverse environment. Racism and sexism play a huge role in determining a new employee's position in the organization.
Suggestions for improvement
- I don't see a potential for improvement in the workplace environment here. Unfortunately, the owner has to change his attitude toward his employees for anything to improve.
What I like about the company
Employees can expect to be proud to say they work for this company. It has the reputation as the premiere restaurant in all of central Missouri with excellent food and impeccable service. Servers have the potential to make excellent money.
What I dislike about the company
The owner is the worst thing about this company - unfortunately, he controls everything with an iron thumb. Employees are never sure about the security of their jobs because the owner is known to fire people for very strange reasons - or no reason at all.
If the owner values an employee, he will make promises to that employee in an attempt to keep them and then make excuses for why a promise can't be kept.
No discount is offered to employees who eat at the establishment.
