Suggestions for improvement

  • Other than pay, I truly have no other complaints about where I work. Coworkers are always friendly and your supervisors make sure that you're doing fine and are willing to listen to you if you have any issues.

What I like about the company

Have gained extensive knowledge about various databases, researching skills, familiarity with the software, and have bonded with a number of coworkers (now friends). Supervisors care about my well-being and my desire to excel in the workplace.

What I dislike about the company

I believe that the pay for the part-timers could be better. Those positions fall below the national averages (and the state average) of pay by between $5.00-$10.00, give or take. Given how mentally strenuous these positions are, I believe that a substantial pay-raise would be in order.

Support from management

The general impression that is received from management is "We are going to do it this way, because we decided it and send it down on high without any input from someone who actually completed this position on a regular basis." Input from employees is completely disregarded, even discouraged. The director once commented that "Employees need to learn their place."

Teamwork

There are several employees who are terrible at their jobs and have been given warning after warning, but they are never fired for poor performance. This creates really terrible morale for other employees who have to pick up the slack of terrible employees who are never disciplined or fired.

Office / Work Environment

This is a very toxic work environment where employees are given free rein to behave however they wish. I had an incident with an employee who was bullying another employee relentlessly. I went to my direct supervisor for help, but she did not discipline the employee and allowed the bullying to continue. As far as I know, that employee is still employed there and makes everyone miserable and hate being at work because of her poor attitude and work ethic.

Suggestions for improvement

  • More professionalism and ethical behavior on the part of the administration. The administrators need to be thoroughly trained in business and management skills that value hard work, communication, and professionalism

What I like about the company

The customers are wonderful and are appreciative of staff efforts to assist them

What I dislike about the company

Too top heavy on administration. Run by short sighted, biased, prejudiced, self-serving professionals who are anything but professional

Central Rappahannock Regional Library is original system making up the city of Fredericksburg the county of Spotsylvania and Stafford as well as Montross and Colonial Beach

Depending on who your supervisor is and what department you're working in you may or may not have any communication at all

I was miserable in this workplace. And my supervisor treated me badly and creates an unpleasant office environment, for me.

Environmental Friendliness

Administration offices had to move to a building under construction we worked in the building while it was in construction it was full of dust fresh paint orders were strong new carpet fibers and glue was very strong it was not a healthy environment for years

You must know here your family is not taken into consideration yes you will feel pressure to work longer hours if there is an emergency or a sickness you most likely will lose your job

No matter how hard you worked or how many extra things you done or how many times you volunteered or marched in the parade there was no security here

This place does not offer a safe and healthy environment there is no safe place to walk every corner and aisles are covered with boxes,, books metal pieces and to top it off most of the buildings are very old and full of mold and mildew Administration offices were under construction when we were working in them full of dust, paint odor and carpet fiber and glue odor for years

Challenging Work

At this workplace my colleagues were always given more opportunities to move up then I at this job I was not even given the opportunity to do the full job description do to my supervisor. Those opportunities were given to the employee with the biggest apple

This company thinks diversity only pertains to race. This company has no sensitivity or culture. This company needs to work on its departmental leadership skills.

Career Development

Most of the positions here are part-time. It's a great high school/college job, but not a career unless you have an MLS, and even then you need some luck.

Overall compensation for your work

For a library, they pay REALLY well. Part-time employees are even eligible to contribute to the deffered-comp plan and employees with 20+ hours earn pro-rated leave.

Office / Work Environment

The employees are wonderful. However, some of the patrons are homeless, and not in the best of conditions. Some are very difficult to work with.
