Suggestions for improvement
- Certainly to perform a much more detailed and extensive check for national search of upper management. To ascertain that all administrative openings especially for full time position be filled with prospects who take the civil test instead of granting part-timers full time positions without testing. This will get the right people to work as a team with the rest department staff.
What I like about the company
In about 12 years working there I've worked in several departments and learned different aspects of city government and employment. The pay is the best compared to any other municipalities in the area and even in the private sector for my job description. My hard work ethic is appreciated. Most of all, I have the best bosses I've ever worked for in my life and I am 60 years old. My bosses are the department director and the manager. I love my job which is at the 311 call center from where I service and help the constituents. I networked with connections in almost all city departments that are helpful with questions I may have to help a constituent.
What I dislike about the company
I disapprove of how top management positions are filled by promoting from within with people who have no management experience, therefore often creating a micro-management environment. Then again there have been national searches for top management which resulted in worse micro-management and resulting in one director being fired for taking kickbacks. Working for government makes it extremely difficult to fire people for negative conduct and indiscretions, whereas in the corporate world these people would not last. This makes it uncomfortable for some people who have to put up with the bad conduct of one person, including a member of the city manager's office who physically attacked a director in a staff meeting and the person still kept his job. Also, bad work ethic doesn't get anyone fired. That's government for you.
