I loved working at the library! Worked there for almost 23 years. However, it was very difficult to advance or be heard.
Suggestions for improvement
- I would try to give employees more perks that improve morale (i.e., employee of the month gets a special parking place). Some things cost hardly anything but boost morale greatly. I would ask for suggestions from the staff and actually implement the ones that are feasible.Make all staff feel like we give a hoot about them. Encourage and support staff outings, picnics, parties, etc. to encourage bonding. Make the culture and environment open and welcoming and transparent. Reward employees for good service and innovative ideas.
What I like about the company
Getting to help children learn to love books, helping patrons find needed materials, ordering Interlibrary Loan materials, these are the things I loved about my job. It was a very satisfying feeling when you go home to know that you had helped people that day.
What I dislike about the company
Management should listen to feedback from employees; no one knows the customers like the people on the front lines do. Employee suggestions can make the work flow more smoothly. Just because some of the staff doesn't have college degrees doesn't make them idiots; experience counts too. Handicapped employees shouldn't be made to feel less valuable than the able-bodied employees (which I know is illegal, but it was the definite impression the handicapped employees, including myself, were acutely aware of).
