Support from management
Too much emphasis is made to meet minority hiring priorities.
Esprit de corps is missing. Every man and woman for themselves with strong desires to divide the workforce over unity.
Freedom to work independently
As with most large organizations everything requires approvals. The process is old and dated using Lotus software that's 30 years old.
Overall compensation for your work
Beware there is a mandatory retirement plan that is a 6.5% deduction. You have no control on the investment, it takes 30 years to equate to half your pay and has a 10 year vestment. This is never disclosed in the city's hiring process. I learned at the end of my first pay period on my paycheck. Insurance is very expensive for family coverage. They are self insured for health as an HMO managed by a third party. Beware a pre approved procedure may not be covered. Cost me big money.
