Suggestions for improvement

  • Get aligned with what other states are requiring for their teachers, new and old. Set reasonable expectations for new teacher development. Set a premium on quality, experienced teachers: professional development and continuing education is great, but it is not the determining factor in a quality educator. Give schools enough autonomy to meet their zone's needs, but hold administration accountable.

What I like about the company

My school gave me some great experience as a new teacher. Teachers are provided many professional development opportunities. However, too much emphasis is placed on the quantity of professional development, and not the quality- especially for new teachers. The district does not manage their budget exceptionally well. My administrator did an excellent job with diminishing funds. The pay for new teachers is great. It is, however, a high stress environment- depending on many factors- including your school. There is far less incentive for teachers to be retained, and turnover is high. The district, and state, management of education is not great. However, if you can get into a good, supportive school, then things are fairly decent. I overall had great experiences, and it is like any other job- the higher ups can seriously effect the quality of the work environment and work, but colleagues and climate make or break the job.

What I dislike about the company

Management of budget.
Ownership of budget shortfalls.
New teacher expectations and requirements.
Retention of/ pay for experienced teachers (teacher retention).

Suggestions for improvement

  • Split the district into smaller regions so that we aren't just tiny cogs in a giant machine. It's awful for morale to know that really, no one is truly looking out for you. Get a union that actually does their job. Improve pay and health benefits so that we can stop worrying about paychecks and healthcare and focus on the children.

What I like about the company

The students are, often, the best part of the job. They don't really have anything to do with the company other than that they've been placed where they've been placed due to someone within the district.

What I dislike about the company

The benefits offered are not very beneficial. The health insurance is terrible. Almost nothing is covered. I had to wait over a year to be seen by a doctor. A co-worker recently told me that she had to get a cheek swab for testing and she was charged $10,000 for it WITH insurance. The system changes often, but they don't tell you what has changed, so if you happen to find a doctor that takes the insurance at one point, a month later, they may be out of network.

As far as the district itself goes, it's huge and you're just a number. My salary with an advanced degree and experience was the same as someone just coming out of undergrad. I tried to fight it with the union for as long as I could, and then the school year started and I had to focus my attention on my students and not my pay. We never got a raise last year and my cost of living increased significantly. I found out, 7 months into my first year, that I wasn't actually endorsed to do my job and was asked to figure out what I needed to do to get the endorsement. I was offered little help with this and have since found a job that I am endorsed to do in another state.
