Company Culture

Many nice people, but you have to work to connect as there's a lot of isolation.

Support from management

They're distant and usually make problems worse.

Teamwork

If you want to, you can. There's no support or plan for this.

Freedom to work independently

You must work independently. You can do anything you like in class because there's no supervision.

Internal Communication

After 7 years, I never received or worked with someone who received a Thank You for going beyond the call of duty.

Gender Equality

Oh, no. My male colleagues got reimbursed for expenses for international teaching, that women are denied. I'm taking them to court over this.

Attitude towards older colleagues

If you're over their "Age Limit" you can't teach in China.

Career Development

There aren't many positions above Adjunct Professor. A few, but very few.

Overall compensation for your work

Most universities pay more. My current job does.

Office / Work Environment

Very basic offices. Classrooms are standard. You'll need to provide your own laptop.

Work-Life Balance

No. Most of us worked 50-70 hours a week.

Company Image

The conditions were so bad that I was embarrassed to talk about my employer when others were chatting about theirs.

Job Security

You don't know if you'll have courses till a month before the next semester. All the ESL teachers were fired with out a reason why.

Challenging Work

Teaching should be teaching if you're doing it right. There was extra pressure because the university offers few resources. They used to reimburse for books and materials, now they don't. Also they don't pay for instructors to go to conferences, even if y

Inclusive / Diverse

Their hiring seems fair. I don't know who doesn't get hired though.

Suggestions for improvement

  • I would fund and encourage skill development by reimbursing teachers for conference attendance once every two years. Then I would form forums for teachers to share what they've gained from the conference sessions.I would make more positions full time so n

What I like about the company

The students are charming and positive. They're grateful for their teachers and that's significant. The same is true of many university ESL programs though.

What I dislike about the company

I don't like their ethics. They have a lot of students cheating by plagiarizing and buying papers online. The administration will let you fail them, but they may cave and change a grade if a student cries enough. They don't want to lose the revenue from t

Suggestions for improvement

  • I'd hire management who have experience in education and would create a team to design a curriculum that promotes learning and valid assessment. I would follow IRS regulations and give benefits to all adjuncts who work over 12 hours. I would follow the school's academic honesty policy and impose consequences on cheaters rather than turning a blind eye to corruption and students buying essays. I would provide a healthy workplace free of black mold and asbestos.

What I like about the company

I enjoyed the freedom to do whatever I wanted in the classroom. Also, the students were pleasant and some worked hard.

What I dislike about the company

While I can only comment on my department, the constant management changes and the lack of professionalism in administration is exceptionally low. If they just hired experienced educators to manage the program and if they heeded teachers' recommendation to design a real curriculum and to get serious about cheating, the program would vastly improve. They also need to follow IRS regulations. As it is now they flout IRS regulations to the detriment of the adjuncts, who aren't given the benefits they deserve and to all teachers who regularly get incorrect W2s or deductions. Clark currently refuses to fix their errors so teachers have trouble at tax time.

The university needs to listen to their instructors when they expose the black mold and other health hazards. As it is, instructors have to report problems to OSHA and other government agencies for problems to be fixed.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Think long and hard before taking a job at Clark. They don't recognize good employees when they see them, the force people out of positions if they think that they are too old for the job. They have no problem hiring people with no experience to do mid-level jobs, making it hard for everyone else to do their job successfully. The school is all about who you know not what you know. The school needs to take a hard look at its higher administration and see where improvements need to be made and the higher-ups need to be held accountable for what they do.

What I like about the company

Some of my colleagues were great, however, they have pretty much all left the institution.

What I dislike about the company

No upward accountability, blame just gets shifted down, good employees are leaving everyday and people who don't know what they are doing are being hired to replace them.
