Support from management
They are hiring supervisors who do not know how to do their jobs & can't help you do yours. It seems more like they are hiring either YesMen or the GoodOlBoys Club.
Our team had to pull together. They were great. The only thing is gossip was always high & since we are commission sometimes people will take your Sale. That is to be expected in commission jobs (customer calls to get price, hangs up, forgot who they spoke to, calls back and buys from someone else). Especially without clear parameters in place by Management beforehand.
Let's just say I saw a sprinkling of acceptable people of color upstairs in office & sales departments. But a whole bunch of the common variety downstairs in the manual labor parts of the building. What's that about?? Surely there are more beautiful people available than what was selected.
Very well respected for longevity
They are letting people go & hiring more part-timers.
About average. I had a desk job. They do have a mag-lock door & security guard.
Suggestions for improvement
- Listen to your employees. Pay them fairly. Promote from within.
What I like about the company
Variety of customers. You feel good helping someone sell the item/find the employee/get a newspaper/whatever. You become well-informed on the issues because you read a lot of your own product. I'm always amazed at people who've lived here longer than me but don't know half of what's going on in town. I guess that's the benefit of being at s newspaper.
What I dislike about the company
The department is part commission. They only push promotions for their favorites. If they don't want you they will not push you up to the next level even if you perform at the exact same level & have more education- they will put you through a string of interviews as if you are a complete stranger and after the 1st three outsiders they hired instead of you all quit within a day, they eventually give up & try again later. The dept. was struggling but making amazing progress- it looked like we would pull through! We used consultative selling techniques & it worked fairly well. Then they hired new managers who don't know anything about sales & changed all of the processes to a dysfunctional sales method from out of the 1980s: cold call telemarketing. Sales plummeted. They don't listen to their own employees about what works & if something they pushed ahead on fails then it's those employees fault for not 'believing' & trying enough. The notion "Work Smarter not Harder" is lost on them.
