Company Culture

CooperRiis is a very uncomfortable, unwelcoming environment to new staff and new ideas. There is one way to do things and it’s the “OoperRiis” way. The old guard call themselves “culture holders”. Wreaks of exclusivity.

Support from management

Leadership team is basically reasonable people trying to do good by their team. Upper management and psychiatrist are condescending and outright inappropriate without recourse

Teamwork

The lower levels of staff are generally good people but with little experience and just “do as their told” and grumble.

Freedom to work independently

Manager at Asheville is unable to allow for independent function of staff. She micrmages everything and is not skilled

Internal Communication

While there are hundreds of emails and ad nays rum meetings daily, nothing is ever accomplished. Every thing must be “discussed” and only the culture holders have any say in anything.

Men are respected much more than women

You are expected to be there 9 hours a day and since it’s open 365 forget spending time with your family on a holiday. Oh but you can invite your family to come to the CR holiday!

What I like about the company

I love the treatment concept, and believe in it. CooperRiis is not the one to provide it.

What I dislike about the company

This company does not believe in psychotherapy and the disdain runs deep. They charge a lot of money and it’s run like a sleep away camp.

CooperRiis is a healing community, and as such, our culture reflects values such as respect, empowerment, mutual decision-making, and open communication.

Support from management

As the new Executive Director, I am committed daily to identifying needs, clarifying direction, and building trust and safety with all staff.

Teamwork

Staff are incredibly dedicated to our mission. As the new Executive Director, I seek to model openness, inclusivity, and movement away from tendencies to "silo" one's work. We need each other to do our best work.

Freedom to work independently

I am trusted by the Board of Directors to lead. I believe it is essential to empower my staff to have the authority and resources to make decisions most important to their work every day.

Internal Communication

We are working hard to open up new lines of communication, including more town halls, focus groups, staff surveys, and lots of listening by the Executive Director.

Attitude towards older colleagues

Our oldest staff member is 90 years old, and we have several who are older workers. We especially treasure their wisdom, life experience and ongoing contributions.

We offer a range of training opportunities, and are actively exploring new ones.

Overall compensation for your work

My compensation is fair, and commensurate. For those who work here, however, there are intangibles that go beyond salary. These include witnessing individuals find restored hope and purpose, and leaving with restored self-worth.

Office / Work Environment

The founders of CooperRiis, Don and Lisbeth Cooper, made it imperative that they created a place of comfort for all who live and work here. To this end, they have helped us create a beautiful and functional campus.

Environmental Friendliness

Given that our working Farm allows us daily contact with nature, including bountiful crops and animals, we are acutely sensitive to our stewardship of the Earth.

We compost, we recycle and we re-use, more than any other mental health organization of which I have been a part, or observed.

Work-Life Balance

My family and I live on campus, so we know first hand the opportunities and challenges associated with work-life balance.

I think it is fair to say that we work hard. It is also fair to say that we play hard. We enjoy communal celebrations, and with so much beauty around us, we participate in hikes, swimming and other outdoor activities daily.

Yes, CooperRiis has a strong national reputation.

Job Security

We generally operate with a strong core team. From time to time, "pilot" initiatives may not be sustainable. Good financial management includes prioritizing the essentials, and adapting to changing needs.

Yes, we make all necessary and reasonable accommodations.

Workplace Safety

Yes, we have a safety officer and the Executive Director participates in safety rounds. Safety is everyone's responsibility.

Challenging Work

I love the work I do every day, and look forward to finding ways to enrich the lives of my staff, and the residents we serve.

Inclusive / Diverse

It is essential to me to learn from all, including those I might disagree with. Communities must allow and tolerate differences, and celebrate them as much as possible. I am proud of progress we have made to increase the diversity of our staff.

Suggestions for improvement

  • We are currently surveying staff to identify opportunities for improvement. One we are working on is the incorporation of more community-wide celebrations.

What I like about the company

We are mission-focused. We exist to improve the lives of individuals with mental illness, and provide them with a dignified, respectful, and healing community of which to be a part.

What I dislike about the company

That like many non-profits, that we do not yet have the endowment that would allow us to fund anyone who might need us.

Very negative staff to upper management relations; total disconnect!

Decisions are made case by case, which makes it difficult for staff to implement set model!

Typically workers are younger, but I don't see any discrimination there!

Salaries overall are low, with the exception of upper management! There is a big divide between the two!

Computers could be upgraded a bit, but the outdoor environment is beautiful!

The work is mentally draining, so it's tough because you always take your work home! They are open to taking time for self care!

Mixed! I believe they help a lot of folks with mental conditions, yet lost a 3.5 million dollar lawsuit for wrongful termination of an employee!

Job Security

Depends on the census! If it's up, there is lots of work, and if not, jobs are eliminated!

What I like about the company

I have worked with and cared for a lot of wonderful people! I have learned much about personalities, self care and boundaries!

What I dislike about the company

I feel there is a total disconnect between upper management and staff! Upper management work 8 to 5 and VERY rarely interface with staff and residents on a daily basis and NEVER do you see upper management on the weekends!
