Support from management
Management is rarely around, when they are they are criticizing and micromanaging. Constantly change their minds about what is expected and wanted.
Museum director is great at micromanaging and telling you everything your doing wrong. even if it's what you were told to do.
Freedom to work independently
Heck no, for 11 years i was able to, within the last year the director has become a terrible micromanager, horrible to work with, impossible to please
I was constantly talked to about communication. Management never communicates with staff. We are expected to read minds and sadly that is not a skill i possess.
NOPE, we had two maintenance workers, one male one female, same age. For some reason the male worker makes more than the female doing the exact same job, starting on the exact same day.
Attitude towards older colleagues
My supervisor will work with volunteers and is pleasant to their face, but talks about them behind their back to whoever will listen. you will not feel welcome.
No room for advancement, continuing education, growth. If you get a $.25 raise a year your LUCKY.
Overall compensation for your work
No raises, no overtime, no heath insurance. Your expected to do the work of a full time employee with out any of the benefits. CFM truly takes advantage of their employees.
Office / Work Environment
extremely hostile, supervisors gossip about employees to employees, volunteers, visitors, or to anyone else who will listen. Its hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Strong smell of gas from tractors.
LMAO no, CFM is not a green company
I was always expected to cover events even last minute anytime my boss wanted time off. (2-3 months total/year) this is because of illness, injury, vacations, or personal time. I missed wedding of friends and even my own college graduation covering for other staff.
Great place to hang out, terrible place to work!
As long as the director likes you, your fine. She is all over the place though and changes her mind regularly.
Challenging in that you never know what is expected of you. Supervisor is hard to read and never around to ask.
Inclusive / Diverse
Ideas of the director/manager are the only ones that matter. If you give ideas they will be turned down unless management can spin them to be their own idea so they get all the credit.
Suggestions for improvement
- find new management who is less cruel and who won't gossip about employees and volunteers behind their back. anyone around the director is fair game, 12 year girls who volunteer to 85 year old senior citizens to any staff member. If you have contact with the boss you will be gossiped about to anyone and everyone who will listen. Since the board of directors wouldn't address this issue, I left. There is no need for that kind of hostility at anyone's work place especially a nonprofit where you make next to nothing.
What I like about the company
They were fun to work for for the first 11 years, the last year of my employment, my manager became cruel. not very community oriented anymore.
What I dislike about the company
No benefits provided, raises were scarce. The worst was having a supervisor who would gossip and talk behind my back regarding my physical appearance. Talking to other staff members, volunteers, and even visitors. It was so embarrassing and the board of director's, who should have put an end to this, decided to not address it because it was to controversial.
