- COWI Marine North America09.Dec 2015
Supervisors did not commend employees, even though the projects ended up winning awards. Not even a lunch. Favoritism was practiced to a few choice individuals.
Support from management
There was no mentoring nor fostering of career/skills development.
Colleagues hardly asked how you were doing. Minor issues were resolved via multi-dept meetings even though one's desk was next to the other.
Freedom to work independently
Workload was distributed o.k., but employees had little say in structuring their own duties.
Let's say you had a deadline on a Friday, and it's 4pm Thursday. 3 to 4 senior Engineers will meet up, each having their own rough drawing set , and try to produce markups and sketches overnight for the CAD drafting to work on the next day.
During my tenure there, there were 5 female engineers, in a company of over 60 engineers. When I had left, they were down to 2.
Attitude towards older colleagues
There were engineers ranging from their 50s to 80s, and they were a great resource and good to work with.
Mgmt was picky about who they wanted to develop and train. Despite having exisiting individuals who had prior training, mgmt would assign work to those who didn't in order to ecourage their growth.
Overall compensation for your work
Benefits were reasonable, salaries were sub-par.
Office / Work Environment
I had a substandard workstation with as little as 1/5th the computing power of my colleagues, yet I was able to meet deadlines.
The company's clients & projects would please the political right and left.
What few colleagues I enjoyed working with either left the company or were let go. At any rate, they were pleased not to work for this company anymore.
Senior positions tend to be stable, but junior/associate postions were not.
There were regular meetings regarding emergency procedures.
Inclusive / Diverse
The staff was ethnically & internationally diverse, but new opinions/ideas weren't supported.
Suggestions for improvement
- Be more like it's parent company, COWI Denmark.
What I dislike about the company
Ex-employees I've know describe this as a caustic & stressful work environment. Communication, time management and planning was poor. After years of dedication, they put me on furlough then laid me off. The company was still hiring for other, higher salaried positions.
The following benefits were offered to me
