Support from management
Disconnection between exec leadership and management at many levels. Unrealistic expectations set for operations staff. Lack of leadership and direction from Executives esp. in IT.
When things became difficult there was a lot of backstabbing, bad mouthing, and underhanded dealings between employees. These were done to get other's fired, create misdirection to draw attention away from one's own shortfalls, and to create tension for other individuals to make one look better.
Freedom to work independently
A lot of micro-management even at senior and exec levels. Inability to make decisions required of a position without them being changed, or derailed by exec management without warning, cause or substantial reasoning.
Lack of communication, and miscommunication between the business and IT, mostly because of mistrust of IT by the business and unwillingness of the CIO and Directors in IT to listen to the needs of the business.
Overall compensation for your work
Compensation was good considering they made $10B in revenue a year and only had 2,000 employees, bonuses could have been better and CEO made more in bonuses than all of the other employees combined if not 2X more.
It's an oil and gas company, you can take what you want form that.
Many IT positions were eliminated recently when a new CIO was hired, and several people relieved of their positions with little to no compensation package. This was done by the CIO to clear out employees that had been there a while and bring in people he knew.
Many in the operations (O&G side) felt the work environment was unsafe because of lack of safety measures taken and being enforced as well as lack of money put in to maintenance and upkeep of key refinery equipment. The push by executive leadership to work individuals long hours without enough rest (not enough employees to effectively do certain tasks) made mistakes more likely and deaths have happened in the plants.
The work environment created by management, poor communication, and lack of leadership made the IT work the most challenging.
