Most people hate their jobs and are more than happy to spread nasty rumors about their coworkers or try to undermine them.
Support from management
If you have a problem, the management WILL NOT HELP YOU. They will "explain" to you why it's reasonable for your coworkers to harass you. They will talk down to you and will disregard what you say.
Some of the people here will actively undermine and tell lies to management about their coworkers to get ahead.
Freedom to work independently
Workers are expected to work independently, but the management will assume you slack off anyway.
Some things are communicated effectively and professionally. Most things you will hear through the gossip mill.
Attitude towards older colleagues
Many of the people who work at Burns are older, and their skills/experience are valued.
Many people who work at Burns start in the wash and eventually get transferred to a different department that they are interested in.
Overall compensation for your work
Pay is decent, and benefits kick in after a couple of years if you can bear working there that long.
Office / Work Environment
Ventilation is good. Not sure everything is up to code safety-wise, and expect to freeze in the winter because there is no heating provided to those who work outside of the office.
There is recycling, yes.
Workers with families are given leniency, which is nice. However, there is pressure to work overtime (without pay), especially for those without families.
The company has a great reputation because the services they offer are really excellent, and the on-location cleaners are great reps for the company because they have the best job in the company.
This used to be a stable work environment, but in the last year there have been many firings and jobs being cut/restructured. Many of these were surprising, unexpected and unwarranted and many of the remaining employees are uncomfortable with the situation, to say the least. I would not say that it's a stable work environment at all now.
This workplace is not at all wheelchair accessible. Narrow stairs galore.
I think the company assumes you'll just use common sense to avoid injury. But back injuries from heavy lifting are common, as are cuts from the many open blades scattered around the plant.
Will you be proud to turn a dirty rug into a clean rug, or a torn rug into a smaller, not torn rug? Then sure.
Inclusive / Diverse
No. Management may talk a big game but they (and many people in the company) will exhibit racism and sexism without compunction. If you are not a white man, don't expect your opinions to be valued by management.
Suggestions for improvement
- Make an HR position. Provide a legitimate means (with this HR person) for employees to air their concerns/frustrations/complaints without fear of punishment or invalidation. Listen to employees WITHOUT bias. Have an open mind regarding how things should be run and how people should be treated. Respect people's privacy, don't share their private information with anyone who walks into your office.
What I like about the company
There are nice, down-to-earth people that work there. You will also get paid pretty decently.
What I dislike about the company
Management (!!!). There is no HR, no support, a pretty toxic work environment as a combination of (a) selfish/disagreeable coworkers, (b) nice coworkers who are constantly stressed/exhausted from the work, and (c) management who will brush off your concerns. The work is exhausting and management will somehow always think you should be doing more with less.
