Suggestions for improvement

  • Increased flexibility would inevitably lead to great employee satisfaction and would likely decrease the currently high employee turnover rate. Also, there is not enough room for or opportunity for internal growth and advancement.

What I like about the company

Everyone at Dana-Farber is committed and passionate about the cause - treating and ultimately curing cancer. It is very rewarding to work in patient-facing/patient-interactive roles, yet can also be very challenging.

What I dislike about the company

Unfortunately, the company does not offer a tremendous deal of flexibility to staff - despite having the means to do so. This includes limited accessibility or ability to work remotely, no parking available on campus, poor work-life balance, etc. There are also many talented and highly renowned medical providers with difficult personalities whom you are often required to work with/for.

Suggestions for improvement

  • I would encourage senior leadership to remember that the administrative and support staff matter too - when they are happy and well cared-for, they provide crucial resources that enable all the physicians to do their best work. When the administrative team is unhappy and everyone keeps leaving, the physicians also suffer and the quality of their work and their research will go down.

What I like about the company

It was amazing to be part of a team that is literally doing cutting edge work to combat GI cancers. Brilliant physicians doing incredible research and clinical care - that's an honor to be a part of.

What I dislike about the company

The management treats the clinicians well, but does not seem to care very much about the administrative support team. I was expected to do an additional full-time job on top of my existing full time job when a team member quit and wasn't backfilled for 6 months. I even interviewed for the open position, but was not hired...and was not even thanked for doing two jobs for the price of one for half a year.

Suggestions for improvement

  • Hire managers who are sympathetic to the needs of their disabled employees, and drop the attitude of "the institute comes first, before our employees."

What I like about the company

Got to work with cancer patients and felt I had a meaningful, positive impact on their lives.

What I dislike about the company

The pilot program I worked for was poorly handled and changed scope dramatically in the year I was there. During the course of my time in the position I felt increasingly dehumanized. In the beginning I believed I was a part of something important and noteworthy to the institution, and 1 year later I felt like an insignificant cog in a machine.
I am chronically ill and legally protected under the ADA. My manager was not understanding of my disability and repeatedly blamed me for issues in phone coverage, while the job was making me too stressed out to function, which caused me to miss work on a regular basis. The call center was understaffed and employees were underpaid.
