Support from management
The administartion in Syracuse is a complete failure at all levels from the superindepent down. While there are good people within the system, the system as a whole is a failure under the weight of pressure and bullying from the top. The principal at Danforth is simply a puppet for the master.
Attitude towards older colleagues
The staff does an AMAZING job of supporting each other, because they have to. There is nothing easy about urban education, the staff ave to stick together.
Required Professional Development, but not usually helpful in any of the areas we asked for every year.
Overall compensation for your work
For myself it would have been 5 stars, I was a pensioned employee, the medical and dental coverage in Syracuse used to be second to none, but for incoming employees on the new contract, your benefits and future were screwed over for the benefits of those of us retiring.
Office / Work Environment
The school is falling apart. Nothing gets fixed in a timely fashion.
No one in education should expect a work life balance, it's part of the job
The current superintendent does a very good job of only letting the world see what she wants it to and nothing else. Don't be fooled by the image we project.
NY state is not longer a safe place to work for Urban education, because of the way the tenure system is set up, it makes it very difficult to last beyond 4-5 years or have any security after that.
You will likely be hurt at work, and you will certainly know someone who is hurt at work. Just this week a student put urine in a bag and hung it on the door to a classroom (member of online forums still connected to district). I personally had multiple injuries during my time in Syracuse, specifically at Danforth.
Inclusive / Diverse
The staff is not diverse, which is too bad because the student body is and they deserve to have people who look like them.
