I enjoyed what I did and felt I was able to make a difference in this job. The risk associated is not compensated well.

Teamwork

Teamwork is crucial in this workplace.

Freedom to work independently

Sometimes they trust too much.

Internal Communication

They have yearly evaluations to discuss your strengths and weaknesses. Throughout the rest of the year though, there is no communication.

Overall compensation for your work

There are so many risks associated with this job. You are surrounded by sick immunocompromised patients and are at risk of attaining blood borne pathogens since you work with blood and other infectious bodily fluids at times. You have to work with noncompliant patients.

Environmental Friendliness

Dialysis is not environmentally friendly at all.

Work-Life Balance

They do because they sometimes only give you 2-3 shifts a week if overstaffed.

Workplace Safety

They focus more on patient times and bring quick than they do on safety.

Suggestions for improvement

  • I think management needs improved. I think the FA should be very knowledgeable about healthcare and should have worked in a healthcare profession prior. They need to be out on the floor more to know exactly what goes on. I think the nurses need to step up and not just allow technicians to do all the work.

What I like about the company

DaVita provided paid training for dialysis technician training that was very thorough and taught me so much. I appreciate that they did that for their employees. They also provided many free meals for us at work to show appreciation which was nice. You do have the option to move up and become a preceptor for more money, although not much. They do offer tuition assistance for technicians wishing to attend nursing school, but you have to meet certain criteria to be accepted for assistance. They do allow you to attend a paid training session called Academy which is hosted around the country. They will reimburse you for food and flight/miles which is nice. They also reimburse you for the cost of your license (CNA-DT) as long as you pass your test. Overall, there are many perks associated with this job.

What I dislike about the company

Although there are many perks to this company, I feel the main reason they have so many is that you are not adequately compensated for your work. I do not know how people make enough money at this job to support their families. There are many jobs with much lower risk that pay way more money. I enjoyed my job and the ability to interact with patients, but it is difficult when you don't feel appreciated through your pay. As a dialysis technician, you have to be up at 4:30 in the morning, work with dialysis machines that are very old and are breaking because they need replaced, deal with poor management and nurses that think they're doctors and expect you to do their job for them, having patients and nurses refer to you as "just a tech" when you are the one that approaches the patient, inserts their needles, takes care of them, ensures they are comfortable, and keeps an eye on them throughout their whole treatment to ensure their vitals are okay and no adverse things happen, be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and diseases, be exposed to other infectious diseases, perform duties such as trash and stock supplies that can weigh up to 50 pounds, deal with noncompliant patients that can become hostile/abusive at times, and maybe the most concerning issue is having patients' lives in your hands and knowing that just one mistake can lead to negative consequences or even sometimes/but rarely death of a patient. Overall, there are many negatives to working at this job. It is rewarding in the sense that you have a chance to make a difference, but it is extremely stressful. The biggest problem is lack of adequate pay for a very important needed job in the healthcare field.
