Company Culture

Very low. There was lack of support

Support from management

Most of the time if you had an issue with either another officer of inmate the corporals or captains tended to take the side of their favorite and showed favoritism

Teamwork

No there was a lot of animosity between officers and when higher ups found out about issues they did not act appropriately

They will hire anyone regardless of age because they were desperate for help

There were opportunities to move up or over but it was mostly given to favorites

We did not receive breaks all of the time

Sometimes we would have to work 16 hours with no breaks

  • They need to be more strict in regards to hiring and do a more intense hiring for corporals or higher. Attendance needs to be strict and hours should not be 12 hours or more. Also breaks need to be given

Company Culture

This department is known for "back-biting" and bias between work groups.

Support from management

Even though I was in management, I still had a supervisor. In times of conflict, I got very little support, even when my supervisor agreed with my position. Over time, I got tired of being out on a limb by myself, especially when it was proven over and over that I was correct in my stand. My staff got perplexed to the point that this affected my operation-so I decided to retire. I found this behavior to be rampant in this department.

Teamwork

My staff worked greatly with each other. I insured each got the best training for their duties and held them accountable without micro-managing. Outside my staff we did not get the same support in other employees working with us.

Freedom to work independently

I had significant latitude in "being my own" person. Primarily because I created the arena in which I operated.

Internal Communication

Unfortunately, communication is not a well done factor. Upper tier executives say they desire it, but it is too often a one-way street.

Suggestions for improvement

  • The pay inequalities could be corrected by comparisons to similar jobs outside the State employment sector; the supervision support issue is difficult to resolve because that is within the specific person's own control of his/her own "make-up".

What I like about the company

I was highly regarded as a manager who knew what he was doing. My employees worked hard for us and we enjoyed a team environment. My specific job was a challenge within a highly volatile environment -but I very much enjoyed what I did and the results my team accomplished.

What I dislike about the company

Foremost dislike is the poor pay for the expectation and responsibilities of the job. Secondly, there is a significant lack of support from immediate supervisors because of their fear of their supervision holding a grudge.
