Constant communication; although it will most likely be presented in a negative manner and couched in very unprofessional language.
The majority of employees are women, however I do not believe this due to anything sinister or planned. It simply is due to whom they attract to their open positions.
Attitude towards older colleagues
There are a few tenured employees, and I do not believe they are seen as less capable than newer (younger) employees. Everyone is treated in the same demeaning manner.
Like many small businesses, it is privately owned with the family involved; unless you plan to marry into the family, your opportunities for advancement will be limited. Branch manager is about the top you will reach, although it is a titular position with no real empowerment.
Overall compensation for your work
Sales - base salary is WAY out of tune with market norms; commission plan is company-weighted and biased. Recruiter salaries and commissions are even more absurd when weighed against the level of work performed and demand for time.
Office / Work Environment
The (main) office is a fairly nice facility, although the layout in the pit is a bit unconventional, as candidates are able to view internal and client information while being interviewed.
There is not much focus on any social matters; of course, this may have changed for the better in the recent months.
You are expected to stay ridiculously long hours, begin and end your day at the office, regardless if you have to cross the city after visiting clients, and verbally punished and marginalized for even thinking about taking a PTO day.
This company has essentially been a revolving door, primarily in sales, although recruiters are a close second. The internal image is one of disgust, however people need a job so they "suck it up". Clients image of the company is widely diverse; some love the service, many (MANY) others will not work with DMD at any cost, thus the constant need for NEW business.
Primary factor for a lack of job security (other than poor performance, which is expected) is if you are liked by ownership, although that will change day-to-day, depending of their mood and perceived "unprofessional-ism" (e.g. you dare to disagree with them). Do not deign to ask why you are required to stay such long hours, for redundant and pointless meetings.
While there are no disabled employees that I am aware of, I don't believe there would ever be any discrimination. The building is very accessible.
There does not seem to be any overt safety concerns that I am aware of.
You feel as if you get to keep your job for another day; I suppose that can be a sense of accomplishment. It can be rewarding work, however the passion is beaten out of you in short notice.
Inclusive / Diverse
Yes. If you blindly agree with ownership, you are golden; if you do not, then beware. That is the level of diversity fostered here.
Suggestions for improvement
- When your ad states you will not have "someone looking over your shoulder", stand by that. There is no need to paint a Picasso to bring them in the door and then have my 1st-grade painting actually hanging in the vestibule. Listen to your employees suggestions, and if valid - implement them! If not, then thank them and move on. Empower your people and stand behind them when they mess up (and they will- they are human). Revise your compensation plan out of the '80's and it will not only attract great talent, it will keep them there. Stop fueling divisions between sales and recruiting; and stop having the East office in competition with the West office for clients and market share. Pay on time, especially expenses; if you have timely demands for them them, stand by your timely commitments TO them as well. Stop the redundant paperwork required to document activity; either CRM or on paper, not both. Create an atmosphere that people want to be in, not one they cannot wait to get out of. Create loyalty by being loyal to the team. Instill passion in what they do by demonstrating passion in what YOU do; why did you build the business in the first place? Promote ingenuity, initiative, and inventiveness; not just if you like them and they are a "yes" person. Have capable people in leadership roles, that will actually retain clients rather than drive them away because they cannot speak in a professional, courteous manner. Stop believing you created the staffing business, and show humility for the success you have had - no matter what you think, you did not achieve it all by yourself. Show gratitude to those that show passion in what they do, rather than beat it out of them in myriad, soul-sucking ways. Understand that pettiness is not attractive in a person, and much less so when demonstrated by the full leadership team in an organization. Close the revolving door; give people a reason to want to stay by encouraging their growth rather than stifling them. Learn to recognize and reward competency and ability; everyone internally knows who is able to accomplish what, but leadership does not seem to realize the same. When mistakes happen, support the staff (when warranted of course); the goodwill you receive in return will far outweigh the effort you had to put forth.
What I like about the company
I enjoyed some of the people I met there. I also learned what NOT to do in this industry to ensure long-term client loyalty.
What I dislike about the company
Unwarranted sense of grandeur, industry leader and innovator, and lack of awareness in their true market image. You are given a bill of goods while interviewing, but when the blindfold is ripped away, the fiction that is the job posting hits you square in the eye. You have little to no value as a voice, as it is easier to replace you with other, more sycophantic lemmings. It could be a tremendous place to work, and probably was at one time; they need to get back to those roots and back to what worked previously.
